Semantics

Comcast also said the man was a contractor, not an actual Comcast employee.
When will compaines learn, that is NOT an excuse. Whether or not Comcast ran a technician in question through their 'rigorous' training, any individual doing the work for Comcast is a representation of Comcast.

I was just about to comment on that. Whether he is a Comcast employee or not, customers don't know or care; all they know is that he represents Comcast and is there to do a job. The reputation of Comcast lies in the hands of whoever they send out to do the work, be it a contractor or an actual employee.

But Comcast isn't the only one that has problems with Contractors. I've had my own share of contractors sent out by Adelphia who had no idea what they were doing at my home. One instance the guy knocked on my door to let me know he was going to cut my cable for failure to pay and back payments. After showing him bills, etc it was determined he had the wrong house. Had he not knocked, or had I not been home, my cable would have been disconnected. The contractor could hardly speak English. When an Adelphia employee would come out, the work would be done correctly and in a timely fashion. Besides, some contractors have these crappy old pickup trucks and you often wonder if they are really who they say they are.

Agreed! Customers do not care if he is a contractor or not, all they know is he is from the company, in this case Comcast!

Statement of fact NOT an excuse.

Well it's not like they ended the press release with random tidbits of world facts.
"Comcast apologizes and oh, by the way, the sky is blue."

It's them excusing themselves from the full force of blame, just dropping that little 'fact'. A fact can still be an excuse.

Regardless, this topic is based on a family's hearsay. I think we're all getting a bit too excited, myself included over it. As a poster below mentioned, wheres the YouTube already?

They made sure the contractor fired him. In the US, getting bad employees is a foregone occurrence. The school systems now turn out uneducated lazy bums more than anything else.

No parents at home being parents either.

Don't blame the school system when probably 85% of the problem starts at home.

I agree that parents are a big part of the problem.

I would also completely agree, and could go higher than 85%, but I wasn't about to start directly pointing fingers and starting the flame war considering that's not really the topic. The anti-teacher crowd lurks among us.

I mean, haven't you heard, school is just a gov't funded daycare to a lot of parents, from what I've seen.

I don't know if there are many folks that are anti-teacher. It's the NEA that people hate.

I do believe the story said the KID used his CAMERA PHONE to snap a STILL PICTURE of the SLEEPING TECH.

But when you talk about Comcast excusing themself from full blame, what do you want comcast to do? They fired the tech, the corrected the subscriber's service as requested... what do you want them to do already? Put the regions VP out in public on their knees begging forgiveness? Really, .... they did the one and only thing that any company can do.. relieved the employee of the need to sleep on the job in the future and appologized.

Anything wanted more than what they did is just the lynch mob looking for another reason to bitch.

Please show me a company out there that would condone this type of behaviour without doing what they did..

Who's ComCARP and what's the point to you posting this message, yet again? This isn't just Comcast, it's just about every cable company out there, or I should say, cable sub-contractor since this type of an ad usually comes from the contractor, not the cable operator.

If this was a carpenters job, sometimes a light auto mechanics, or even electician or plumbers job, you'd see a similar ad as well... So, maybe your home, too, was built by a guy who saw a similar ad like this.

I have all of that at home right now except the truck. Well, I have a couple of different DeWalt 14.4 volt drills, so I am 3.6 volts short there, but I have pretty much everything else on the list just from doing stuff around the house.

So, I can go get an old van for about $2,000 and be all set for a career making $10.00 and hour with Comcast?!

I know what you're saying. I guess I'm just trying to point out it's one of those "I'm sorry......but"

You know, I'm sure you know friends, family, co-workers, that can just never take the losing/in the wrong side of something. They can't just stop at "You're right" without adding a "but".

Comcast says 'sure, it's unfortunate, we're sorry, we fired him, it's all good, but hey, he wasn't even our employee, so it's not like we have to change anything, right?'

I don't know, it just seems like it's a way of trying to spin things for the up, which is frustrating to see. Their actions were good, as it was an almost required action.

It's just frustrating when they, or anyone, takes action, cleans up the mess, and then tacks on a "well he wasn't even our employee anyway, so we're going above and beyond here, if anything, we should be rewarded since we shouldn't even have to do anything in the first place", you know what I'm saying?

I'm all for canning the employee, I guess, but does anyone ask or address the WHY? Why did he fall asleep, if it was not simply the lazy bum factor? Maybe the man has 28 kids or 7 jobs, or a medical condition, who knows - no one, because perhaps no one asked.

The best question is WHY does Comcast, or any other company, have such lax standards on hiring who they're going to represent them? Go back to the source of the problem, instead of the quick fix when things go wrong. It'll save everyone a PR person on their payroll to spin damage control.
