X10 dot com's as old as the public internet. It's been in operation as a mailorder since long before the internet. X10 is "ancient" technology. It actually has nothing to do with cameras, but that's what they're pushing, right now... x10 is a home control technology invented in 1968 that relies on "spikes" at the zero crossing point of the ~60Hz sine wave of your electrical system to turn lights and appliances on and off.
Carnivore doesn't need this kind of cloak and dagger "hit generation." It works at the ISP, not at a remote monitoring station, like echelon. They aren't sniffing you, they're logging you, if you're surveilled that way. Even if that reference was meant as a satirical shot, it's silly... why would they rely on infantile script kiddie tricks?
Popunders are damn annoying, though. Also bandwidth wasters. They're not just screwing the user, they're junking up the internet with worthless crapola... if they want to keeop it under your eye, a banner would work better... and, just to momentarily return to carnivore, web bugging would be far more subtle, and easier to slide through to a properly configured (java/X secure) browser...
And what's Steve talking about? Proxomitron or web washer, to name just two, will kill the popup... just as effectively as a properly configured "internet zone" will in IE... my nickel's worth ... (;) inflation)... -- "Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar." - Sir Winston Churchill |

Re: Oh, no! They're inside the computer, Mabel... Never! Why, I have... an enquiring mind, doncha know???
At any rate, while I'm quite sure it's not "really" a carnivore deep cover front, I do have some sneaking suspicions that they may cause brain damage, if viewed in excess ... after all, look at what just one viewing did to the minds of otherwise stable, intelligent webmasters who want our repeat traffic... why, it's softened their brains so thoroughly, on a mere single viewing, that they've been subtly brainwashed into attaching it to their own websites, for a few pennys a hit... now... THAT's sinister!!!
PS- Sorry if I was a little obtuse on the carnivore barb... just seems that I've heard about a hundred conflicting tall tales (and that's just from the government, themselves as to how it works and what it does... I just couldn't help picturing someone out there actually spending six hours analyzing a packet capture, looking for the "secret messages..." Hehe... never fails... probably the same fellow who went out and bought up Charmin's last year's production run when johnny Carson announced the infamous "toilet paper shortage of '74..." -- "Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar." - Sir Winston Churchill [text was edited by author 2001-11-01 19:35:44] |
