On a serious note, I guess I need to find out how Kona is doing since I have some financial interests invested over there. hmmm... |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to Gizy Aloha from Hilo!
I was asleep when it hit and the building I am in (condo on the ocean) was shaking and rolling so heavily that it almost knocked me off the bed. The pictures on my bedroom walls were swaying like pendulums. Small items on my dresser fell to the floor. I was very scared. I had not felt one that strong since 1984. I called it at 6.5 (knew I was right...I have an uncanny ability to correctly estimate the strength every time usually right on the nose and if off just a very small amount). I thought if it kept up for even 15 seconds more that the building might collapse (or, at the very least, have serious damage) because at 6.5 the danger was the length of time more than the strength. I was really surprised later to learn that the epicenter was on the other side of the island. I was especially worried about the condo next door. It is much larger than mine and has been declared structurally unsafe by several architects and is predicted to come down in any large earthquake 7.5 or so. But their board of directors says those are just rumors (while the concrete falls off continually in large chunks from the lanais) so I was so glad that the duration of the quake was not prolonged.
The electricity was only off about an hour here but much longer in other areas and on Oahu. The radio stations here are full of static or off the air. I managed to hear Harry Kim's (our mayor) Civil Defense message about an hour ago over the static. (Today is his birthday)! The belt highway is closed indefinitely at the 39 mile marker and a detour through sugarcane fields will likely be built. That means folks in Hilo who work on the Kona side can't get to work for awhile. The schools are being inspected and an announcement later today if they will open tomorrow.
The Kona Hospital is evacuated (patients brought to Hilo) and the ceilings collapsed but the building may be savable...the thing is so old! It should be replaced. Lots of damage to property but no lives lost which is the most important thing.
It is sort of ironic that the day is absolutely gorgeous.
I hope Konaguy checks in as he lives right near the epicenter. We've been asked by the Civil Defense to stay off the landline phones so I can't call him (I don't have a cell and I heard they aren't working anyhow).
The electricity was out to 95% of the people on Oahu and not expected to be returned until late this afternoon so I am puzzled as to how my cable connection is working as the Regional Data Center is on Oahu.
Evidently the physical damage is bad but no lives lost and that is the most important thing. I'm doing what we have been asked to do...stay at home and I have no TV so I'm glad my cable connection is working so I can get news online since the radio stations are full of static. -- "If you want to do DRM on a PC then you need to treat the user as the enemy." I guess they had the fun earlier today of having to negotiate many flights of stairs to get down to the ground as electricity was off to 95% of the residents on Oahu. I hope they didn't have the misfortune of getting caught in an elevator! It is their first visit to Hawaii...so they will have a tale to tell when they get back to Vegas! |

I would of easily traded to be in that general area instead of you because I love mother nature.
Even if you didn't want to trade I would of traded with anyone on Hawaii instead then to take their place! |

1 edit | Better late than never
I was at work today when the earthquake hit. I was getting Sunday ad signs out when the walls started to shake. I immediately ran out of the office. A TV fell down right in front of me.. It was really surreal and frightening. We ended up staying out of the building until it was all clear.
Our Kona house got moderately damaged. Our other house in Ka'u we are unsure about. But since the epicenter was north of Kona we are hopeful it didn't get too damaged.
I'm still frazzled and shocked about what happened today. |
