Re: Battlefield 2142 ships with spyware? Say it ain't so said by spaterson:said by Midak:Ok, so has anyone actually seen the ads yet? The billboards are still not showing anything other than "IGA" (I think it says IGA) but nothing else. Maybe the spyware comes in later as a patch since they say now it will auto patch. As soon as I see an ad, I will check processes and HJT again. I played for a few hours and didn't see anything. I think I saw the same "IGA" as you did, but I don't think it's IGA, or an ad. If that's an ad, it's a pretty poor ad. Scott According to the front page article on this website , EA will not activate the ad's until the initial sales spike has finished. (Sneakiness to the extreme)

"..EA has not yet actually activated the ads in BF2142. This could be to ensure maximum sales during the critical initial release period, where negative word-of-mouth over the ads could harm sales.." |

There's another one I won't be buying.

| reply to Blackbird M$ suggests that if you're having issues with the KB917422 patch, you can install KB924867 (from their website) to patch the vulnerability and allow affected apps (there are a ton of them) to run correctly.
So... You can re-patch the system after the original patch broke a bunch of apps, thus negating the whole removal thing. |

There needs to be an opt out option. Barring that the only other way is to opt not to buy it. The funny thing is they still expect you to pay full price when they are pulling in ad revenue. The game still sells for $49.99. -- I'm for freedom - go ahead and call me a terrorist. I won't give up my freedom for you to feel safe. |

| reply to salzan said by salzan:I won't be buying any game that uses this calling out/home activity. Even the auto patch feature previously mentioned by Midak is enough to put me off. So what's next? Click on (or shoot) the ad to visit the website? I think all multiplayer games do that. Ever notice it has to phone home to master server to get sever lists, MOTDs, etc.? -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support.
