Re: [Services] Mail Issues/All of Bellsouth.net?smtp service is either lagged or still down. I am unable to send anything out yet. Perhaps it is the 10 gazillion backed up emails that BS has to send. |

i have had severe outages all night. my statics were iffy at best. several of my connections were totally down until just a few minutes ago, even teh dial back up.
my mail server sends fine on bsfa. the folks complaining about not being able to run there own should get business accounts. you then set the server smtp to also listen on port 26. this gets around any blocks of you sending mail to your own server from off site.
seems the only problem i still have is a dead dual wan router. |

Within the last 2 hours, it looks like download speeds have returned to a reasonable range in Memphis. I'm still only getting 1/3 to 1/2 of the 6 Mbps I'm paying for. I rarely get the full 6 Mbps, but it is usually higher than 4 Mbps. Last night, I was measuring download speeds in Kbps not Mbps.
On a positive note, I occasionally use a remote desktop connection from the Internet to a DSL connected computer at home. For several months it has been usable, but much more sluggish than I would expect in drawing and updating the screen. This morning, the remote desktop connection is much more snappy - like I would expect it to be. I don't have any measurements for comparison, but it is more than a subjective improvement. Based on this, I wonder if they have made some changes to the network to reduce latency.
It would be nice if we, as customers, got some kind of explanation for such a major outage. But I'm not holding my breath. |

Its amazing how one outage now makes you the devil.
I had bsfa since 99 and this is the second major outage Ive had to deal with. Overall I'd say thats a good record. |

I've had quite a few ISP's and BSFA has gone the longest with no down time. I would doubt very seriously that there is a company out there that hasn't had at least one major crash. |

I also agree wholeheartedly. This day and age people expect things up 100% all the time no exceptions and that is simply too much to expect in the technology world. There is not a single provider out there who has not had a major crash I would bet....
On the other hand, I think the tech support people at Bell should have known more about the outage at the time. They seemed to be clueless and unresponsive. |

They seemed to be clueless and unresponsive. my job is the system engineer for a two way radio and paging company. when we have a major problem, all our tech support can tell the customers is we are working on it. the reason is simple, if i take the time to update everyone as to what is going on, then i am delaying fixing the problem. so no updates until the fix is in place. same thing with bell, but on a larger scale. technicians do not like to be interupted when working a major problem, regardless of where they work. |

I've got to take exception to that. I'm the CIO where I work. I know this can be dealt with far better than BS dealt with it.
Outages happen - but they don't happen for long if you've throught through your high availability strategy and put it into play. BellSouth is enormous, and has tremendous resources. A nine state outage that lasts all night is simply a symptom of crappy technology management.
Even if they got hacked or sandbagged with something that simply couldn't be anticipated, there is absolutely no reason for a business this big to go totally mute during a firefight.
While I agree that technicians do not like to be interrupted when working on a major problem, any company with more than a handful of people will have management who's responsibility in this situation is to communicate status to the rest of the business, and to customers. That very same management team can make it clear to almost any reasonable technician that taking a few minutes off the problem to discuss it, to help meet that need, is fundamental to customer satisfaction. Sometimes that break even yields a faster path to recovery.
You don't have to drop your customer satisfaction agenda on the floor when a technical problem jumps up. People can overcome that impulse. I know - I've made it happen. |

because of reliability problem's with bellsouth i switched to Earthlink several months ago.
Bellsouth infrastructure has been declining for several years.
Tech support is the worst even in these days of outsourcing.
They are arrogant. |
