At some point IE6 will not/cannot be updated, and IE 7 will be needed, they are also considering this a critical update.

I don't plan on using IE for more than WU, but I updated to it.

On my XP-SP2 HE system with Outlook 2003, mail that is read in anything other than plain text open incredibly slow since updating to IE7. Takes over 2 minutes for some to open.
