Not quite so fast

Before everybody falls all over themselves, it would be a good idea to read the first comment in this blog entry as the subject of this thread. It's by John Gilmore, and he makes some really cogent points.

1) It's not all free WiFi - the city is paying for infrastructure
2) Many object to the privacy issues involved: free use requires a login. Usage can be tracked.

Now of course we're also seeing the generic run-of-the-mill SF nutbars, and I don't doubt that the politicians are either tech-morons or posturing fools, but that doesn't mean that there are no valid issues worth raising.
