| Ack ! If the telcos spent $20m to "sway" the California legislature.. you know the end result is good for telco and bad for California. I've been through the lies, BS and FUD spewed by SBC/AT&T to 1. avoid competition and 2. avoid bringing broadband to an obscure resort area with 80,000 households. The end result was no competition, no broadband. SBC refused to share lines - they still do despite the FCC mandate, and at that time the broadband SBC brought to town was barely faster than a 56.8k modem.
Probably the most amazing thing that happened was when i dropped the snoopy new AT&T in favor of cable broadband a few months ago. Telco - suddenly decided they could provide better speed at a lower price than I had been paying which was their normal bait and trap policy. What they don't tell you in your 6 months at $24.99 contract the price you now pay can more than double when the initial "gotcha" contract expires. Plus the speed you enjoy the first six months may slow appreciably after the 6 months is up.
Now I have cable, Vonage and a non-Cingular cell phone and there isn't a da&*#ned thing AT&T can do to about it. I laugh at the expensive 4-color FUD campaigns to woo me back into the fold; I throw 'em in the trash. As long as I have a choice, AT&T is my last choice for any type of communications service - and that includes satellite and wireless. -- Mac: No windows, No gates, Apple inside |
