It should be fixed now - I forgot to unblock pings on the wan interface on my router.

Looks good now. It could take a couple of hours for your graph to start populating. We'll know for sure then if you got it right.

You're asking me?

Sorry but I have no idea. Maybe someone else around here does.

well yes if your machine has no power/is un-pingable, pings would time out.
Do you mean power outages elsewhere cause high latentcy?
Not directly but if routers are down due to power loss, you may be routed via less optimized routes, which may be experiencing higher than normal traffic.
on major backbones the difference should be almost unnoticable, but closer to the last mile (your end, or the other end) if the ISPs have limited peering points/agreements, your packets might travel to many far off points and back resulting in high pings or timeouts.

[Info] Re: [ALL] Something new for our Forum - Line Monitoring SignUps

Can I get an invite? I've got line monitoring setup, my firewall is pingable, and I've updated my profile.

If we're in a group line monitoring, it doesn't cost us tool points, right?

To the poster about high ping times: No. A power outage will cause high ping time in that it will never respond, but if a network device is responding to ICMP requests (ie: it's configured correctly and has power), then that is not a factor in response time.

A few things that can affect ping times; cpu load of the network device, limited or saturated upload bandwidth, internet weather, and bad luck.

For example, if my router is doing port forwarding for a couple hundred ports, has a few devices in dmz, is QoSing, generating a web interface, and I'm downloading a ton of stuff on bit torrent, if you ping me, my ping times will be higher. The router is likely doing so much that it can't process the ICMP requests as quickly as if I was at work and not using my computer at all.

If I'm uploading several hundred megs of whatever to a friend, my upload bandwidth will be saturated. This not only will cause me to have EXTREMELY slow web browsing speed, but if you ping me, i'll receive the request, but my response will get queued and delayed in the upload buffer. This delay isn't much, but its more than a few miliseconds, which is all that it takes for a ping to 'take longer'

Hope this helps.

Any hint as to what is causing all the dropouts in the monitoring? (who's monitoring the monitors?)
Could one of the west coast servers, be set as the default display? (either for this/west coast group(s) or individually)

I have no idea why the East Coast monitor is having all the drops. I've been doing line monitoring for over a year now and it happens every so often with all the monitors.

As far as you setting your default display to a West Coast monitor, that can't be done at this time. You may want to request that in the »Feedback Forum.

Thanks, Sashwa

I think I have everything setup correctly for the time being. I have been using the dynamic DNS function built into my router, but it looks like I'll need to setup one of these other programs if I want it to update my IP automatically on DSLR.

I'm not sure if you need my line number, but just incase it is 231412.

That I don't know for sure. I do know you can't use a domain to update your IP.

FWIW, I use DeeEnEss »Line Monitoring FAQ »How do I configure DeeEnEs? .

Those of you on a dynamic IP who experienced an extended power outage, please remember to update the IP.
I came back after 11hours to see my monitor running......but it wasn't me.
