You'll need to verify that your RCA modem supporst DOCSIS 2.0. From what I know, the RCA modems are pretty old for Insight customers. If it only supports DOCSIS 1.1, you will need to get a DOCSIS 2.0 capable cable modem. I don't know how to tell you to determine this other than going to RCA's website or googleing for the info.

You may wish to log into your WRV and check the MTU setting. Although I don't have your router, I do have a Linksys RV082. I discovered some years ago that if I allowed the MTU setting (in the case of the RV082, it's on the Firewall tab), to be set to 'Auto' the RV would negotiate the MTU down to 576 and utterly kill throughput. On the other hand, setting the MTU on the RV to 'Manual' with the correct value for cable of 1500 allowed full throughput to be achieved.

Playing those games on a home host server is no fun. I did notice insight is probing gaming ports to see if you have a server up on your line. It will get your account suspended just like my friend did for running a ftp server the other day. VPN here we come.

You'd expect massive packet loss if the network was trying to compensate for a downed router. Level3 routers have been down. That trace route I posted was just what was happening at that point in time and you cant for sure say there is packet loss just because a router does not respond to your ICMP request as when it did reply it was in the 40s and subsequent trace routes did not show this however the Insight hops have consistent high ping times from my area and or neighbor hood.
Besides 90% of the time the level3 routers never show any loss from here but if they did I would be complaining about the backbone providers instead of Insights network.
In a nutshell there will always be intermittent issues with routing on the internet but in this case its Insights network that has had 7 months of consistent issues affecting my area not the backbone providers.

Over the past 7 months as we have been going through this nightmare I rarely see any issues related to level3, AT&T or Sprint. If this were the root of the evil I would be on the phone with them on a daily basis as they all provide internet connectivity and WAN connectivity for my company in this region.
Also you should know just because a router doesn't respond to an ICMP request does not mean there is an issue as ICMP ping requests will be placed lower in queue in relation to higher priority threads the router is processing such as routing traffic and or ICMP messages are being blocked by security configuration on the router.

AT&T never reported anything to us in regards to outages or issues for our area as we recieve reports from them and Sprint daily as apart of our service agreements with them. The above trace shows its clearly a hop (router) on Insights network and I have been battling with Insight since May on these issues.

Actually, the routing problems WERE all over the place. Couple of forums have users spread out across the country, almost over 300 users on the WoW forums experiencing packet loss at AT&T. They fixed it yesterday however. Seems Level3 has ridiculous packet loss for some of the other users. Insight never had any problem other than over usage in some areas. Traceroutes on most forums I've seen pointed right at AT&T backbone, seems they've fixed it though, I didn't have any lag last night and better download times.

I hate to tell you guys but it does not matter where I do a speed test from I get the same results. AT&T DSL neighbor down the street is rock solid and has not experienced any issues.
My issues are on Insights network and always have been.

My response time from Insights routers (first few hops) are over 126ms consistently which is unacceptable.
You may not have this issue in your area but we do here.

The backbone providers you speak of are not having issues as if they were there would be routing problems all over the place and there are not. I support internet connectivity for 12 manufacturing plants in this region and we have had no problems with Sprint or AT&T backbones.
You can monitor the AT&T backbone here if you like.

See the interesting comparison? My SG test was quite faster than yours uploading and almost dead-on the same on the DL, but you still smoke me at testmynet. We both know that we don't get those upload speeds in reality at SG, but it is interesting that our up speeds seem to be high, at the expense of the download number being lower. I wonder if the translation is taking the actual numbers away from the DL side and adding them to the up side while not truly being the actual result.

Anyway, we both do about the same at Speedtest.net, though I think they need to fix how the ending translation of uploads speeds finish. It sometimes jumps down though it clearly averaged well into the 900s the last few seconds of the run. I called tech support after recieving my letter on thursday and they told me the Anderson area upgrade was to be completed by Friday at midnight.
Modem still recieving config set to 6MB Downstream and 512KB Upstream.

Sure enough, I got 10 megs to Chicago.
But while I was down to 600K last night, here's what I get this morning on SpeakEasy to Palo Alto.
It is clear to me that in the evenings, my connection slows down to a crawl. I can see it even when surfing.
Finding one site that gives me 10 megs to Chicago doesn't make up for less than 1 meg at night to California. I'm not sure how much of this is Insight's fault, and I find it hard to assess blame. Somebody who understands this stuff is going to have to explain how 10 meg speed does me any good when in actuality I get much less than 4 at night. I'm pretty sure I used to get 4 all of the time, before the "improvements."

For some reason the speed tests that I use to score full speed at are running super slow for me now while I can get full speed to other places. So go run some at speedtest at different locations. Chicago is incredibly slow for me but kansas city is the best and atlanta was ~2000kbit. (which is weird since I thought we were routed through atlanta)

For that matter, downloading stuff from one place might be fast but when I try to get something from another place then sometimes it's slow even if it's the only download running. :(

He posted on Oct. 17th that network testing was underway and, a month later, I was anticipating a smoother transition. But, I'll hang in there and let them do their job.

I have had service people here twice, done everything asked of me by them and my service is still flaky.
Frankly I am at my wits end. Because of where I live I am captive if I want any kind of broadband. (Although we have T-6 wireless saying they are available). But just because my area of the county is captive is no reason I should have to put up with this.

I have rarely ever had a problem getting my 4 megabits. My only issues were with Giganews, but switching to the European server fixed that without a problem. I often (almost every day at different points) get 4.7 to 6.5 megabit downloads from various sources.

Other speed tests here are hitting between 800Kbps, and 7200Kbps depending on the location of the test server, but it seems there's a routing issue somewhere that's preventing any sustained throughput for http based downloads (Microsoft.com downloads @ 100KBps, Downloading from my personal web site, host in New York State is around 100KBps as well, so that's about 1100Kbps...)

They're not sending out the notices until the service is installed or is about to be installed in your area, so I highly doubt that any of you who haven't received the upgrade have gotten the notice, either. You can't expect to get higher speeds if Insight hasn't even told you about them yet.
As far as I'm concerned, getting up-in-arms about not getting 2.5x the speed for FREE all because other people have gotten the update, regardless of the fact that you haven't gotten any notice or word about the upgrade, is simply school-age-esque jealous behaviour. Don't complain unless Insight promises you one thing, and then fails to deliver. And even then, be happy that they're not raising the cost of their service like some other ISPs would do (Comcast), because after all, if you don't visit this site's forums, you likely wouldn't even know that there is an imminent upgrade to begin with.

on a related note to this...10Mb/sec is pretty fast..don't forget that once this happens that you will likely have a faster connection than many servers can supply out there on the www.

I ran some tests at work, both on a 100M connection and then after I upgraded my connection to a full GigE connection. Obviously, the www cant support those kind of speeds for the most part... but I will tell you that there is a HUGE difference between the speeds I can pull from the west coast and speeds here in the midwest. If I was getting 26,000kb/sec from chicago, then seattle was as low as 7000kb/s.
The highest I could hit chicago with the Gig connection was 350,000kbps....not to shabby, but no where near what my connection can do on the LAN.

You need to add to your list of limiting factors that most people probably have cable modems and routers that have only 10Mbps WAN connections. there's no way these people will see 10Mbps down because of the overhead of the connection. I suspect in the coming weeks we'll be seeing many complaints in these forums from people with older equipment complaining that they are not getting the max and blaming Insight.

Thanks again for the frequent and information-packed updates. I don't think any other ISP-specific forum gets this kind of personal attention from the head honcho of the company.

I had Giganews' pay service up until August, and I was able to get full 4mb speeds up until I cancelled the service to use the free Insight Giganews Service. The difference is that if you log in using an official Giganews Login, then your speed "should" be unlimited. However, if you use netnews.insightbb.com, the speed will be limited. I am able to get 180-190KB/sec on most days with 6 connections.

I heard about other people having problems with speed on their paid Giganews accounts, but I never had any trouble when I was usings the news.giganews.com server with my login and password from Giganews. Concerning GigaNews:

Okay, here's the deal with GigaNews. Insight's 'newsgroup' service is bound to the giganews DNS, so any IP from the news.giganews.com address will be slower than expected, even if you have a pay GigaNews account, this hit me hard when Insight switched to GigaNews as I use giganews for many video clips and even patches that take 20 seconds over Usenet rather than 1 hour over http.

Anyway, the only way around it that I found was to use news-europe.giganews.com, you can still get fast speeds but the connection is not nearly as stable and fast as the regular GigaNews. I wound up using NewsHosting as my primary news server and the Europe giganews to fill anything that wasn't completed.

I truly wish Insight would work with Giganews to use a different DNS for the basic usenet service, so that those of us who want to be able to use our high speed can do so with a pay account. Right now I pay double for Giganews and NewsHosting. Mr. Willner perhaps you can speak with your guys about this? Hope that helps guys.

Back when it first started, I'd get the full advertised 4mbps down (and 375kbps up), but then it slowed down to around ~3mbps. Changing the router out worked wonders for the reliability, but the speed was still horrible. Then, about a month ago, I bought a new cable modem, and that nearly fixed it all. Unfortunately, the speed was still pretty low, at around ~2.5mbps, but as of about two weeks ago, it went up to the advertised 4mbps. Perhaps it was because of your new upgrades. Either way, I've been happy with Insight again, since. And now that we're getting free speed upgrades that rival competing broadband services from RoadRunner and Comcast, I can no longer say that I'm stuck with a slow cable ISP that I can't do anything about.

I also want to say that we all really do appreciate you being involved in the community and giving us updates. It's something that no other company that I can think of does, and it really shows that you care.

On a side note, though, back before the summer switches, my IP address varied between Noblesville and Anderson. After the switch and continuing to this day, my IP address's location is way down in Louisville, and sometimes ip2location.com has no idea where the heck it is -- all it knows is that it is located somewhere in Indiana!
If I live just east of Indianapolis, should I be getting my internet from Louisville? And, by the way, Broadband Plus maximum speeds are being increased to 15 mg for downloads and 1.5 mg for uploads!

We waited until we were as sure as possible that we wouldn’t find too many unexpected issues before making the announcement. Over the course of the next several weeks, we will be authorizing customers’ modems to operate on our network at these great new speeds. The rollout will be on a district-by-district basis to ensure a smooth transition.

These new speeds mean that Insight offers our customers the fastest choice available to them. Period.

I know most of you know this already but I want to be spend a minute to be very clear about what this means.

• We will be substantially increasing your authorized speeds on our Broadband network. However, as with any Internet service, your actual speeds at any given time will be impacted by a number of factors. First, in-home equipment and the way it is configured and connected can affect speeds. For instance, using a USB connection to your modem will slow you down. Wireless routers, like 802.11b models that operate at a maximum speed of 11 mg may not provide maximum speeds because there are many factors that limit them below their maximums. Conversely, 802.11g routers, which are rated to operate at 54 mg, should be able to operate at full speed, provided they are not being used by too many users at once. A word to the wise -- if you have a wireless router, make sure it is security enabled or your neighbors may be consuming your bandwidth (without you even knowing) and slowing you down to a crawl.

• Other factors come into play once you leave our network. Your speeds will be affected by the traffic and limitations of Internet routers and the websites you visit. Keep in mind that even though we will be authorizing you to operate on the Insight network at these very high speeds, your actual speeds will be impacted by factors beyond our network and therefore beyond our control.

We also have been doing and will continue to do a lot of behind-the-scenes work to improve your Broadband experience in other ways. We’re in the process of increasing our DNS capacity and moving those servers closer to our customers. We’re reviewing our routing configurations with our backbone carriers and will work, starting in early 2007, to seek to shorten hops to certain popular sites. We also are aware of how important “ping times” are to gamers and we are looking for ways to improve those experiences as well. We don’t have specific timetables on some of these issues right now, but be assured we are reviewing them and planning some changes.

I hope you will find your Broadband experience improved materially by these changes. Our new speed limits will help to unlock the power of the Internet for many of you in ways unimaginable just a few years ago.
