In my neighborhood in Valencia, CA, Southern California Edison's 16 kV (buried) underground line went bad, and cooked AT&T's (SBC/PacBell) underground lines and burnt up a couple of blocks of underground wire. The wire was melted all the way to my ground block at the house. It took a couple of weeks to repair all the lines (new PVC, 22 AWG vs. 24 AWG) and my DSL works better
