Since it's not the only one, and I know that isn't the only Lotus Elise around, it can be replaced. Due to the hyper-exotic construction techniques used in the Lotus, it does look like a total loss.

I would be a bit perturbed by their incompetence and inability to follow instructions, but murder is a bit much. :) Either way, being upset isn't going to get the car replaced any quicker, and a calm person will probably get a bit farther with their insurance than a raving lunatic.

At the end of the day, it's a car, meant to be driven. They all are. And driving is going to cause wear, tear, and even a bit of damage. Nature of the beast. Sure, it sucks when someone else's stupidity causes your car to get damaged, but it's still only a car. It can be fixed or replaced.

My Mercedes S-class got totaled a few years back, and I was more put out about having to go through the paperwork and assorted BS than I was about the car getting wrecked. It's a car. And I had just put a new transmission into it. I actually explained that calmly to the adjuster (for the other party's insurance), showed him a receipt, and he made an appropriate adjustment to their compensation. I got what I thought the car was worth, so I was happy, and able to replace it with an even nicer car.

As long as they rent him something roughly equivalent in the meantime, he should be fine. (Actually, he mentioned a Porsche of some sort as a back up, so he's obviously not suffering for cars. It does stink that he won't be able to take his Lotus to the Lotus event her organized.)
