On the first page of this thread, we decided how you are to get a chance to host him. The person that has him posts a photo in the gallery (make sure you turn on "allow comments"). The first person that has not had him yet to post to the photo will get him next. Postage is paid by the person sending him. Its not much postage unless you decide like some to send him in a care/share package. He is small, though not a lightweight when drinking, he dosent weigh much. Much less than a pound. I think it was like $3.00 to send him priority. Have fun, and like always, keep an eye on him. I still have him. He came at a weird time for me. Right after I got him was the 4th of July holiday, where I had planned all kinds of great outings for him at the lake. But, he was left "home alone" and didn't get to partake in the fun. After the 4th, I was getting ready to move and didn't have time to work with him and I actually lost him for a week during the move. I did get a few shots before the move and I posted one today: »bjl picture 'Bridwell getting in to the wine!' It looks like Bridwell will be headed to South Dakota ( TJ19971 See Profile) next.

Bridwell wanted to visit his cousin Bardwell the Troll who has a home with a view under the bridge over the Knik River. Bardwell wasn't home. Bridwell wanted to see grand vistas.

Grand vistas it will be. The view to the north of the Matanuska River Valley. One false move or a big gust of wind and it's a 220 foot drop straight down. Bridwell was one tough customer. He showed no fear.

The view to the south of the Matanuska River Valley. Once again Bridwell showed no fear. However, he was ready to move away from the cliff. He wanted to check out places that people could pan for gold.

Bridwell sitting on a rock midstream of the Little Susitna River that cuts through Hatcher Pass. The Independence Gold Mine hadn't opened for the tourist season yet. Bridwell wanted to pan for gold anyway, but I told him he'd be shot sight unseen for infringing on a private claim.

All in all, Bridwell was a well-behaved guest. When the weather was stormy, I could find Bridwell gazing with longing at the tropical oasis in the room downstairs. He could stare at tropical fish for hours.

He was delayed in Alaska during their long Winter, but I promise to try and give him a quick turn around once I get him.

We didn't get much chance to talk last night because it looked like the four three of them were interested in having a good time. (Apparently the Chinese guy changed his mind, I've just been informed.)

Bridwell is very excited about the trip. We've been sitting here this morning getting to know each other and looking at pictures. He is looking forward to the very spicy food in the Sichuan Province of China. On my way back, I should be able to get up to the Great Wall with Beaver and Bridwell during my two day stay in Beijing after we leave Chongqing. We depart this Monday - I'll return to Chicago on the 13th of March, my wife and daughter on the 26th. My wife's hometown is JiangJin, China, about an hour drive southwest of ChongQing. This is my fifth visit since our marriage in October 2000. The butterflies are now around the clock. I can't wait.

Bridwell is most curious about Beaver - but seems a little worried now. After looking at all the pictures in Beaver's thread, he sees what a maniac he is. I told him that since Beaver has been here a couple times already that he may be a little possessive about a few things, and to sit very still when Beaver first sees him. I think everything will be ok. If Bridwell gets along well with Arnie while here, he'll be safe. Although he accepts him now, Arnie doesn't really care for Beaver - he's not a dog or a human, making him something to chase down and devour. Beaver won't mess with Arnie.

Two days after the Gnome first arrived, I made a request to bring him with us to China. As it turned out we never did go last winter, but we have a departure date set for next month, 25 February.
I would like to take him with us, if the forum pleases.

The New York State Traveling Beaver, my personal friend, will be accompanying us this year. I will stay for two weeks or so, my wife and daughter will stay a week or two longer. Beaver will return home with me, and so will the Gnome. We will be home sometime around the middle of March.

The Continuing Travels of Bridwell the Gnome

Are you all sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

Bridwell showed up here last week and immediately wanted show me the snapshot he had taken by a lovely member of the airplane's crew. He was much prouder of the way he got on with the stewardess that took the photo, though.[att=1]

He was positively aglow after the trip so I guess it was one of the better flights he's had. Here he is on the tarmac just after touching down:[att=2]

Nobody told me that Bridwell had this thing for trying to ride on car roofs. This kept up all the time we were traveling as you will find out.[att=3]

He's really a handful but I guess that's what happens when you're 4,296 years old. Here he is asking for help getting out of the river that he waded into.[att=4]

"I was just examining the bridge's architecture," he excused but I wasn't buying it. I was starting to think that he was just trying to get on my nerves.[att=5]

The next thing I knew, he was back on the roof of the car. One of these times he's going to fall off and get dead.[att=6]

Then a quick stop at a Montreal institution, Gibeau's Orange Julep to replenish our bodily fluids. Now Bridwell's shouting "Hurry up with my drink!"[att=7]

So we sat for a bit, admired the sky and finished our drinks.[att=8]

I manhandled him off the roof once more and we set off for the top of Mount Royal, the extinct volcano that forms the island that is Montreal. Upon reaching the summit the only thing we could do was to lay down in the grass and admire the incredible sky that was painted for us...[att=9]

...and admire it some more. I'm sure that Bridwell had something to do with it![att=10]

Just a bit down from the summit there's a man-made lake and a little chalet with whatever conveniences you might need (and he did).[att=11]

After removing him from the lake − he seems to have an affinity for water − it was time to climb back up, over the summit and back to the car. We couldn't figure out what this was supposed to be (I guess it's art) but Bridwell wanted a touristy kind of snapshot with it anyway.[att=12]

As we made our way back down the mountain, encountering only minor traffic, we got to The Lookout. Funny, but access to the lookout is only possible when descending the mountain. I reassured Bridwell that the big white gizmo sticking up in the top left was not the landing of unwelcome visitors but our own "Stade Olympique", the stadium built for the 1976 Olympics (psssttt... we're still paying for it and the roof keeps falling in).[att=13]

With a fleetness of foot that was hitherto unknown in these parts, there he was, blocking my shot. Being Canadian I said, "Excuse me please." Ignoring me like a cyclist on a Montreal street, Bridwell bellowed "I want to go THERE!", and pointed over to the right.[att=14]

So we set out for the Big Yellow Arrow in the sky. "Do you hear sirens?" A quick look around and "Oh, crap." We pulled over and, what do you know, Bridwell was back on top of the car.[att=15]

Well we made it down to the Big Yellow Arrow without further incident and were greeted with a vacant parking spot very close to our destination. Did I mention before that Bridwell's powers seem to be all-encompassing? Where did he go? Already on the sidewalk he muttered, "I've just got to get this..." As if by magic (in retrospect I guess it was) he instantly held a blank canvas, some paint pots and a brush. He set to work. A minute passed... Another minute passed, followed quickly by yet another minute AND HE WAS DONE![att=16]

I looked around. I looked around again. Oh, he's on top of the bloody car again. Hmmmm, it looks like it might be an OK evening after all − "Romance = Bridwell".[att=17]

What am I going to do with this gnomish houseguest? Oh well, I guess I have to be a gracious host and go along with what he wants.[att=18]

It's 85° outside and Bridwell's just a bit hot from that last stop. With an authoritative snap of his little fingers... This guy couldn't just find a nice air conditioned restaurant to cool down in, no, he's got to make a snowman appear in the heart of Montreal in the summer![att=19]

"OK, I'm all cooled down. Now I want a Cabine Privée [Private Booth] and, for being such a gracious host, it's my treat." Is there no stopping this mini-guest?[att=20]

"Let's just ride about with the wind in our hats." I mentioned to him that, in this part of town, you're never quite sure what the owner of the Harley is like and that he's probably not some affable gentleman. "So?" Mentioning that the law requires that all motorcycle riders wear helmets seemed to have cooled his jets a bit though.[att=21]

"Bloody Hell! Save me! It just moved its leg!" At this point I'm starting to think that you just can't believe what gnomes say. Maybe it's just this one.[att=22]

Well it was getting late so we started back toward the car. My legs (as well as the rest of me) were beginning to get pretty tired. Next thing I know Bridwell's up in a store window. "I've pretty much worn out my shoes today, what do you think of these?" There was a hint of envy in his voice that I'd never heard before.[att=23]

Almost home, we figured that we'd cap off the evening with Sundaes and Cappuccino Milkshakes at Twist and Creme. I mentioned offhandedly to him that a lot of the "cult classic" Zombie Nightmare (1986) was shot there and that the great Montreal jazz musician, Charlie Biddle Sr., had a role in the movie as a janitor. Bridwell remained unimpressed.[att=24]

This is a great project and a wonderful idea for getting people even more involved in this forum. I've only been part of this forum for less than 2 months and, by following the simple rules, will be the next person to host Bridwell. I don't see how this can be construed as cliques or an "old boys club" kind of thing as some have inferred.

This endeavor started out as a dubious project and has now since grown way too large and unwieldy to continue its present unorganized chain of custody. Case in point: What are the chances that someone from this site will randomly just check out this thread and somehow know when exactly the custodial member is ready to ship out the gnome? Seems to me a large majority of the issues associated with this project could be easily avoided simply by establishing a chain of custody list with definitive policies as to how long the gnome may be kept as well as to whom it goes to next.

The bottom line is that this project has simply outgrown its original next door neighborness mentality and there needs to be better organization. Otherwise, what's the point? I read about this gnome all the time and would like to host it at some point but I know there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that I would ever know when I should check this thread so that I could be the next lucky winner. It's turning into a popularity contest established by the "cool" kids and there's nothing worse than that particular kind of clique-ey mentality, IMO. I'm sure there are many here who agree with me, but have been silenced.

It's just ironic how this particular facet of this particular web site is supposedly to bring together people sharing their digital photography interests, however the reality is that it further polarizes them by engendering/creating elite cliques, instead.

Just an FYI for everyone, Bridwell is on his way to Boston. I sent him off yesterday morning. Suprisingly it was only $5.30 for 2day. I know some were wondering what shipping would be. I think it was $3.something for first class.
