Re: Zone Alarm Security Suite To Use Kaspersky

It does not like Firefox 2.0. Locked up again.

It works ok so far with my Fx 2.0. I installed it on a virtual computer and I just got on that computer. It has been running minimized all night to the task bar of the host computer. So, first thing I see is a notice from ZA that the antivirus has updated! So, it finally updated on its own but it appears to auto update only once every 24 hours not every hour like ZA says it will.

Plus, I got another popup saying the definitions would not be complete until I reboot. Yuck. KAV has a bug apparently and many are having this problem with having to reboot everytime it updates. I haven't had that problem with MP1 on my host computer but I appear to have it with the version of KAV running on ZA on the virtual computer. Maybe it is just a one time thing as early this AM Kaspersky put out a bad update and all of us who caught that update had KAV repeatedly crashing ...all fixed now but who knows that could have also affected ZA possibly.

Ya well I ve had problems as well...... the internet went down here this afternoon, dropped carrier and everything else on the modem. When I got back from surfing ZA was trying to update the virus definitions. Since there was nothing outside of the LAN the update failed and the little update window said unable to update. The window would not close. I rebooted the machine and when I did I got a message that the beta trial was done and it was time to buy the software. When I clicked buy now nothing happened. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the beta and got the same message. Did another uninstall and tried installing the earlier version and it would not start after the reboot. Went back for the second time and regedited everything away. Im in process of installing --trying to -- for the third time. We will see. Gonna suck if neither the beta nor my paid version can be made to protect the machine. More as it happens.

If one reads the fine print on ALL beta software it will say do not install this on your primary PC, use a test machine.

Beta back up and running fine after regedit and reinstall. We loose the internet pretty frequently here in Mexico sometimes for hours like today, most times for minutes. After this runs for a while Im going to try to time exactly when the AV tries to update. Additionally Im going to disconnect the modem from the router and try to simulate another unable to update to see if the hang is duplicated again. I elected not to reinstall my previous ZASS version because I want to play with this one. If it runs well when my other 2 machines get here Ill use it for those as well.

Mele Im not having any problems with FF2.0 and this beta so far, at least none that have caused a lockup. Only the hang and resultant problem from a failure to update. More as it happens.

Batterup thnks for the reminder I do have a laptop when all else fails. More as it happens

I had to reinstall windows. My PC kept locking up, even after uninstalling ZA beta. I suspect I quarentined a false positive file. Maybe I will try it again after it is final.

The popup I got said I had to reboot to finish the KAV updates. That is a bug in KAV. Well, I rebooted and was confronted with a login box for Windows! I have NEVER seen a login box for Windows XP on any machine as I don't have a password and usually Windows simply boots to the Welcome screen for a few seconds and then on to the desktop. There is no login.

So, here was this login screen wanting a password. I had no idea what to do since I don't have a password. I clicked on a bunch of stuff on the window and finally rebooted ...three times and got the password window each time. I kept clicking and finally it disappeared and booted on to the desktop. That must be a bug with ZA. I've got to go file a bug report on this and several other things.

Carr, I'm glad you got the beta running again. dakkon74, that is bad that you had to reinstall Windows. These are reasons why I put it on a virtual machine. I took a snapshot just before installing it so I can just revert the machine to the snapshot and it will be like ZA had never been there. I haven't used ZA in several years and was curious. I originally got ZA when it first came out in beta when I had dialup and had never heard of this site. I don't know how many people asked me what a firewall was back then and no one had heard of ZA. I thought it was the most super cool software I had tried and I used it for several years and here I am seeing what it is like now after a period of time not using it.

I only put it on one of my fours PCs. It sucked having to reinstall windows and everything else, but not a huge deal. I know the risks with beta software. I may give ZA beta another go in a few weeks.

Bestbuy has ZAISS on sale for $10 this week after instant rebate. I picked up another copy yesterday. I figured that way I have another license if I decide I really like the new package. This of course assumes I will be able to use the 2007 license for this upcoming new version.

Wow Mele that is interesting..... so far so good here. When I m through with the machine for the night I disable the LAN connection and the machine goes to sleep. This morning I checked the log on ZA to see if it had tried to update throughout the night and it did not. Be interesting to see how many times today it tries to .

I ve used ZA for a while both the free version and Pro firewall. I gravitated, rightly or wrongly to security suites to keep from cluttering the machine up with so much ware, some of which would conflict. Prior to this Beta I had decided to get rid of Zonealarm at the end of this subscription due to a number of problems and various reinstalls to try to eliminate them. With KAV part of the suite now I may hold off for a while.

FYI so far today ZASS Beta updated twice automatically, once at noon and once at 2 PM. Anyone wanna guess about 4 ??? I have all of the loggging options turned on and can see this in the AV log.

Anyone seeing an update problem with the beta?? Twice today the program hangs on updates and the machine has to be rebooted to clear the hang. I reset updates to manual after the second hang and when attempting a manual update I get an "Anti Virus update error!" message. Anyone know how to restore this functionality?? I hope they fix this, I like having Kaspersky as part of my security.

It updated just fine for me just now. I had another snapshot open until a little while ago so it wasn't running yesterday or today until I read your post and switched to the snapshot that has ZA to see if I would have trouble updating. It updated immediately on its own.

It doesn't seem to get along with the Proxomitron though. Plus, it blocked my local network and I can't believe that ZA says I should password protect the files I share on the local network...I share the entire C drive of my 98SE box and I grab whatever file I want off of any of my virtual machines and plop it on the main machine or vice versa. How ridiculous to say I need to password protect all my files! That is absurd.

Plus, I noticed it blocked the DNS server...I had forgotten how much I grew to dislike software firewalls and finally stopped using ZA several years ago because it was too irritating. Plus, I don't believe one thing it has said...firewall wise because the router is in control not ZA. I was only interested in ZA possibly if ProcessGuard goes under, plus, I was curious to see how it has advanced since I used it and I think it is great it is using KAV and I wanted to see how that was set up. I use PG to control what calls out and that is what I would want ZA for ...not blocking anything incoming as my router takes care of that.

As far as ZA adding KAV, there is only limited configuration for KAV. Thus, I would not recommend this to anyone. I would recommend KIS instead.

ZA really bogs down my computer. It took FOREVER for Firefox to load 15 tabs from the last session. That was ZA causing the extreme slowdown. On the other hand, KAV doesn't slow my computer at all but I don't use Web antivirus module because that does slow my internet speed by more than one-half. ZA is heavier than McAfee Enterprise 8.0i beta that I tested for many months on this computer. ZA causes an even longer delay than McAfee Enterprise (which was an excellent AV except for the slowness) when trying to access Windows Explorer. Kaspersky causes NO slowdowns at all on my host computer as long as I don't use WebAV module. So, I really would not recomend this when there is KIS out there. The firewall in KIS is not that great but if you are behind a router you don't need a software firewall anyhow except for calling out control.

Mele20.....I have Comcast cable internet service, and I had the same problem as you with the HTTP scanner in KAV6. Instead of disabling the HTTP scanner, I uninstalled KAV 6. I tried several other AVs before finally giving KAV6 another try a few weeks ago. I installed 6.0.1.303, and was very surprised to find that with HTTP scanner enabled, my browsing speeds were not affected anymore. I'm now running 6.0.1.411, with no slow downs in browsing speeds with HTTP scanning enabled.

Nothing has changed on my computer between uninstalling KAV way back when, and installing it a few weeks ago. I know from reading the security forums, that some people were having problems with the HTTP scanner. Looks like KAV might have fixed the problem.

EDIT....Sorry if this is a little off topic.

Yes, this is getting very OT but I wanted to thank you for that information. I don't even have the module installed so I can't just enable it to see. But perhaps when I have some time I will reinstall KAV with the module.

Add Feature
You can install the module if you want to, from Control Panel ADD/Remove programs. Click on KAV and you will get the option to modify and add modules you haven't installed. Mele20 See Profile

One thing I would never do is install a ZoneAlarm beta of any type. Heck, even their normal releases are often betas in disguise, and it usually takes several version updates before they get enough of the bugs worked out.

Although I'm very interested in the latest changes, including the switch to Kaspersky antivirus, I'm going to wait for the Version 7 final to be released, and then I'll wait some more until I'm sure it's stable.

For anyone who simply MUST download and install the beta for some reason, I suggest that you at least make an image of your OS first so you'll have a way to recover if things go wrong.
