| Latency vs Online game I saw a post similar to this but it's a month old without any info on the problem so replying seemed pointless.
So here's my situation I'm an avid Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) player. I joined Snappy at the time Direct TV threw all of us in the cyber landfill. I started FFXI in '04 and everything was fine until about a month ago. I can no longer connect to the game. Currently I'm running Windows XP with service pack 2 on the machine with which I play, and I have a home network through a linksys BESFR41 router with 4 computers. I've talked repeatedly with Snappy and the techs at Playonline and here's what we've tried with no success:
Installed service pack 2 for Windows XP
Directly connected the modem to the computer
Switched primary DNS to secondary and vice versa
Disabled all background applications
Disabled all firewalls and anti-virus programs
Disabled all anti-spyware/adware programs
Power cycled the modem
I took my computer to a family member's house that has Bellsouth Fast Access and I was able to connect to the game and play with no problems. Initially it was thought there might be a firewall on Snappy's network blocking the game and Snappy said there were no filters in place. Then it was thought that there might be a firewall on the FFXI network blocking Snappy and Playonline said they had no filters in place. Occaisionally over the past 4 weeks I have been able to connect to the game, but I didn't have the time to test how long the connection would last. The intermidant connectivity along with other lagouts that started late in May of this year lead me to believe that it's nothing more than latency causing the problem. So my questions are if it worked before can it be made to work again and how?
My reason for not simply changing ISPs is one Snappy has been good to me and two finding another ISP that will provide me with ADSL would be a nightmare. I'm on the border of being too far from my CO so that means I pass both pre-qual tests usually. Then I end up getting the hardware but I can't get a signal. Then I have to send it all back and start another search and start the application process all over while in the meantime I have no online service. I would rather have DSL over cable for it's advantages and satalite in Florida would be worse than the situation I'm in now.
If anyone here plays FFXI and has this simliar problem and has found a fix could you please share it. Thankyou. |
