Wii is the only one that...

worth considering as a next-gen console. Its completely newly invented control system speaks for itself - 360 and PS3 is nothing but a nice upgrade of the old, boring console phenomenon. Higher-res graphics (boohoo, PC games had so-called "HD games" ever since), integrated movie player, faster, nicer etc and pretty much that's it. Nothing to be amused by - as a reviewer put it last week the Wii offers at least twice the fun for half the price.

Very well put. I've got a few friends who already have the Wii and they love it and aren't even going to bother with the 360 or PS3. I know im going to be the same way. Not to mention the fact that nearly every launch and upcoming title for the Wii interests me compared to the rehashed sports, FPS, and the like for the PS3 and 360.

Nintendo has a hit here. Hands down.

Not to hijack a thread, but I agree.

The Wii looks innovative and different and it's at a price point I can digest. The 360 and PS3 all look like boring FPS "Ohhh, look at my graphics" rehashes and are WAYYY overpriced for what they are.

The Wii actually has me excited and I went out of my way to drive to an EB and check one out.

I haven't bought a console since the PS1 (bought an XBox from a friend but sold it) and I only bought that for Gran Turismo.

I can't wait to get a Wii though.

I really could care less about the Wii I have an xbox for online gaming and the wii can't compete with the 360 in that area. Nintendo always is slow in producing games for their systems so you won't get as much choice in selecting games for the wii. Remote control for a controller are you kidding me this system is for new gamers who are intimidated by the controls for the new systems. Yes they can be complicated if your not used to it.

I won't get as much choice when selecting games for a Nintendo Wii? Then tell me what's so great about what the XBox 360 or PS3 is offering? All I've seen is a bunch of sequels that is nothing more than a graphic update. What a great 'selection'.

Nintendo has a new style of playing with motion sensitive games, even if there is a bunch of sequels its actually different game play. Also PS3 and XBOX360 have a lot of sequels to name a few Final Fantasy and Halo.

Final Fantasy and Halo?

Final Fantasy hasn't been any good since VII IMHO. I'm not a hard core FF fan though, but none of the others drew me in. Perhaps it's a personal taste kind of thing.

Halo was big, but people are already proclaiming Gears of War the Halo killer and GoW is just another rehashed FPS. While I would love to see CliffyB and Epic rule the roost on the XBox 360, "improved AI and graphics" just doesn't make me give a damn.

The gaming industry as a whole has become VERY stagnant and, honestly, the Wii is the only thing that is different.

To me, I don't care about the graphics, I want a compelling story or something that is just plain FUN.

EXACTLY. It's what I have been trying to say all along. Nintendo has it right the first time: It's all about the gameplay. The only thing I have yet to see on the other consoles are rehashed sequels of pre-existing titles (Final Fantasy is a prime example. So is halo.) with nothing more than graphics upgrades.

Tell me this one: Why do you think the only up to date consoles I own right now are a Nintendo 64 and a Sega Dreamcast? And then explain to me why they get used regularly? Exactly: The games are compelling and FUN.

LOL, look who's talking: there wasn't any selection for Xbox or 360 for months...

No, we don't...

Couldn't imagine more off-target post - complicated? LOL!
FYI: I always hated consoles yet now I have a Wii and the only reason I bought Wii is its controller. And guess what? I am a long-time rabid PC gamer who thinks all console controller so primitive and limited they all sucks big time compared to the standard keyboard and mouse combo on PC. If you think the PS3 or 360's controllers are complicated you shouldn't even try any competitive FPS on PC - you wouldn't be able to put up with it, that's for sure.
You're completely mistook the reason behind N's apparent success: Wii in fact has the first controller that comes close to the freedom of a PC controlling scheme but also goes leaps ahead when it comes to the (motion-)reality and fun factor.

Actually Wii will have a total of 62 (32 new and 30 clssic) games within a month:

Nintendo's Wii Will Boast 62 Titles and Countless New Ways to Play

Oct 31, 2006

32 New Wii Titles and 30 Classics Form Huge Launch Library

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 31, 2006 – Within the first five weeks of launch, Wii owners can pick from up to 62 games, representing the most diverse, and most exciting, console video game library available. Licensees and developers have lined up to support the Wii launch in unprecedented numbers. Wii and its Wii Remote completely change the way people play and experience video games by making every motion of the controller translate into action on the screen. All at once, Wii makes games both easier to play and more immersive. In the five weeks after Wii launches in the United States on Nov. 19, gamers of all ages and abilities will be telling their friends and family: “You’ve got to play this!”

By year’s end, Wii owners will have 32 new titles to play, including industry powerhouse games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Madden NFL ’07, Need for Speed: Carbon and Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam; category-redefining adventures like Red Steel, Elebits and Trauma Center: Second Opinion; and Hollywood favorites like Cars, SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some of these games might be familiar, but if you haven’t played them on Wii, you’re only getting half the experience.

Wii owners also will return to their youth with 30 classic games available for download to play on Wii’s Virtual Console. These include games for the NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx16 consoles. Players redeem Wii Points in the Wii Shop Channel and download their games. And that’s not to mention the entire library of more than 530 Nintendo GameCube games that can be played on the Wii console from day one because Wii is directly backward compatible.

“Developers worldwide have enhanced Wii’s launch library of new games with countless new ways to play,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Whether you pick a completely new property or a classic franchise, the Wii experience draws you in.”

Every Wii owner starts off with Wii Sports, which comes packed in with the console itself. The sporting collection of bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing and golf lets players literally swing the Wii Remote like a bowling ball, racket, bat, boxing glove and golf club. The games are easy for anyone to try and they dramatically demonstrate how Wii makes video games fun for everyone.

For avid gamers, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess emerges as this season’s video game masterpiece. The epic adventure lets players swing the Wii Remote as a sword and can play in a 16:9 aspect ratio with beautiful visuals and glorious sound. Have you ever tilted your controller while playing a driving game, hoping in vain that extra oomph would help you land a huge jump? Now EXCITE TRUCK translates those movements of the Wii Remote as players hold it sideways and turn it like a steering wheel.

Wii’s launch library contains games of all genres, and each one gives gamers a new way to play. While Wii Sports, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and EXCITE TRUCK will be ready to go on launch day, last-minute polishing by third parties means their exact dates will soon be locked down, though most will launch by the end of November. A complete list of launch-day titles will be announced in the near future. Visit www.Wii.com for updates. Third-party publishers have created an impressive list of launch titles for Wii, and their backing will continue steadily into the new year. Before the end of December alone, the following titles will be available:

Activision: Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Rapala Tournament Fishing, Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions

Atari: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2

Atlus: Trauma Center: Second Opinion

EA: Madden NFL ’07, Need for Speed: Carbon

Konami: Elebits

Midway: Happy Feet, Rampage: Total Destruction, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, The Ant Bully

Sega: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz

SNK: Metal Slug Anthology

Tecmo: Super Swing Golf

THQ: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Barnyard, Cars, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Creature from the Krusty Krab

Ubisoft: Far Cry: Vengeance, GT Pro Series, Monster 4X4 World Circuit, Open Season, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent

Vivendi: Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

In addition to these new titles, Nintendo is making the greatest video game archive in history available for download to its Virtual Console. NES games start at 500 Wii Points, Super NES games start at 800 Wii Points and Nintendo 64 games start at 1,000 Wii Points. Sega Genesis games start at 800 Wii Points and TurboGrafx16 games start at 600 Wii Points. Wii Points can be purchased online or at retail at an MSRP of $20 for 2,000 points. Before the end of December, the following titles will be available:

NES: Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Ice Hockey, Pinball, Soccer, Tennis, Urban Champion, Wario’s Woods, Baseball, Solomon’s Key

SNES: F-Zero, SimCity

Re: Wii is the only one that...

Nintendo has done what MS and Sony have been trying to do for awhile now: drawn former gamers back, as well as expanded the market.

Have you heard the stories about people who took their Wii over to the family for the US thanksgiving? By the end of the night, everyone was playing it, even their half-crippled, 70 year old grandmothers were playing bowling or golf, and really enjoying them. Much the same way that the Brain Age and those dog games drew in non-gamers, because they were no harder to pick up and play than tapping the screen or writing on it.

And even the biggest megapublisher, EA is devoting not one, but two whole studios just to creating games for Wii. Along with Disney devoting an entire game studio to Wii game creation. Sony never had a 3rd party studio devoted to just making games for their system.

And as it is, by the end of the year if Nintendo is on the mark for their shipment estimates, they'll be at an easy 4:1 ratio over the PS3(currently sitting at 1 million for Nintendo, 330K for Sony, so a good 3:1 ratio and Nintendo still has Europe to launch in, with higher than expected production numbers), and nearly up to 50% of the 360 market, in less than 2 months.

Wii also has the strongest 3rd party support right now, with literally dozens of A-list titles in development, already shipped, and announced, with some that haven't even been announced to the public yet.

Developers go where the money is. The money is where the development costs are lower and the installed userbase is higher. As it stands, no developer can make a profit on the PS3, because it's been estimated to take 500K units of a game to reach the break-even point. The production costs for the Wii are roughly 1/2-1/3 what they are for the PS3, so that means(assuming the same profit is made by the publisher for both systems) between 175K-250K units of a game need to sell, to make a profit. Something that is easily viable within the next 3 months, for nearly any title.

And then to top it off, Sony themselves will require each user to purchase 20-30 new retail games, just to reach their own break-even point on the costs of the system, offset by the huge cut they take in the MSRP. With a launch attach rate of 3:1 for the Wii and 1.5:1 for the PS3, Sony has a very long way to go.
