pog : Instead of adding a bunch of things, like hue shift, etc... I decided to see if masking would work. It takes a fine touch to avoid a lot of harsh fringing... but I figure having a mask would open up a lot more doors already available in most editors. It will also make it easy to select multiple colors... just run the filter on duplicate layers.

Also added a cross hair for the cursor during selection in the preview. The selection occurs when the right button is released.

[att=1]
I used this image in testing... a bit better than a random photo which may or may not have as many colors, etc.

[att=2]
- I right clicked on the blue square which sets mean hue, mean saturation and mean lightness.
- I wanted a narrower tolerance for hue, so I lowered the hue range. Hue is measured in degrees but for simplicity I have the control go from 0.000 to 1.000. It's the same as 0-360 degrees.
- a range of "1.000" more than covers the entire range available and I wanted to select only blues that were highly saturated. The saturation sliders above mean "select pixels that have a saturation of 73.6% to 100%"
- the lightness selection means 0.572 +/-0.027. In most (all?) spaces with a Lightness channel, it's important to know that 100% lightness is out of gamut if there's any color. 100% lightness in RGB works out to white.
- most of all, this is really more vision-based selection than calculation.

[att=3]
- This is the same as before but I clicked the "mask" checkbox. This can't work unless you're on a layer that has an alpha channel. A message box pops up if there's a problem.
- The blend slider turns into a "gain" slider. Transparency needs to be a bit harsher sometimes, so the gain slider can help with this. It's linear and the results can be severe at full strength (jagged, etc).

[att=4]
- this is the same as above, except the effect slider has moved all the way to the left.
- note that the result is not the exact opposite. I'd like it to be... maybe I will figure out where I goofed. Probably with the "gain".

[att=5]
- setting the ranges for hue and lightness allows me to select based on saturation. The settings for saturation say "select pixels that have 0-2.7% saturation". Sometimes, what we see as pure gray is not perfectly gray and has some saturation in it.
- note how harsh the selection is... this is the gain ramped up high, mostly.

[att=6]
- here, more seriously, I want to isolate a certain set of greens. It's pretty smooth IMO... output below.

[att=7]

[att=8]
download the filter here. The instructions are the same as the original post. Have fun!

Don't forget to post your before/after shots... I'd love to see them! :)
--
My Site
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

original test image

isolate a specific blue

mask a specific blue

inverse mask a specific blue

mask specific saturation

isolate specific range of green

isolate specific range of green output

pog_color_fi···lpha.zip 98,765 bytes
zipped 8bf plugin

pog :

EDIT: I've uploaded an updated version in this thread: »Re: [FYI] Pog's Color Filtrator v.032 alpha...

Yeah... I had an idea about using specific hue ranges to make cool b&w images. It didn't pan out... but I learned a lot about light and why digital imagery may never fully replace film AND color optical filters. Not saying digital can't be good... but it can never be the same. It's a long story... and I've only started to scratch the surface, really.

Anyway, while coding my idea I changed gears and produced a selective desaturation tool. It's called "Pog's Color Filtrator".

This is a Photoshop filter plugin (*.8bf). It will work with most Windows applications that can host these (PSP, Photopaint, etc). If you want to try it out, just extract the single file in the zip and save it in your image program's filter directory. You may need to restart your application.

This is not commercial software and there are no warranties or guarantees. However, it is free to use without royalties of any kind.

Now... to explain what this plugin does: color selection is done in HSL space (hue, saturation and lightness). The user specifies a target HSL value (mean) and a variance (range) for each. Normal (aka Gaussian) distribution is used to decide what pixels are to affected. The "effect" slider goes into negative territory to desaturate pixels that fall inside the distribution. A positive "effect" desaturates pixels outside the distribution. The "blend" slider dictates how much of the "effect" there should be vs the original image.

The effect itself is done in Lab space using double precision floating point math. The L channel is left untouched and saturation is not increased anywhere... so no need to worry about going out of gamut.

The coolest part, IMO, is that you can right click in the preview window to set the HSL values quickly and accurately. :)

[att=1]
[att=2]
[att=3]

edit: download deleted... see new version. link above

Let me know if you find any bugs or have any difficulties. Later on, if I again find the time and impetus, I will add a way to selectively increase saturation and lightness... and to perhaps selectively shift hues.

Heh... I'm sure Photoshop itself can do all of this easily already. I don't have Photoshop, though... and I get to say I did it my way. LOL!

Enjoy! :)
--
My Site
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

screenshot

before

after
