Interesting Results

I keep seeing reports of how Sprint Wireless beats the competition, but in SW Florida, that's not necessarily the case. A friend who, is a Radio Engineer for a Broadcaster in the area, recently tested Sprint, Verizon, Cingular and Alltel. His stations wanted to test the feasibility of using wireless cell services for remote broadcasts. This guy is more anal than me (that's not necessarily a bad thing), and is very thorough in any task he undertakes. His results for the Fort Myers and Naples area showed that Verizon beat them all. I was surprised due to the reports I read here and other sites. I just thought I'd pass this info on and was curious if anyone else has compared the competition for themselves?

I agree with you, Sphincter. Sprint is horrible in this market too.

The test seems to count out Cingular all together and gets a tie for Sprint and Verizon on coverage, but Sprint wins the "Unlimited" test.

So, Sprint it is, unless their coverage sucks in the areas you want service in.

I can confirm this as well as although I don't have a Rev A card I get speeds of around 500Kbps/76Kbps and sometimes much less. By the way the carrier I am referring to is Sprint. But I am in SE Florida.

I have to say that I am also surprised Sprint got top honors.
I can see why Cingular came last especially in Rural areas as the Service sucks (I can speak from personal experience having seen and used Cingular Nationwide from Miami, FL to Timbuktoo, MT).
Verizon needs to stop advertising "Unlimited" when it isn't.
If it wasn't for that fact Verizon should have beat Sprint by far.
Don't get me wrong, I am a Sprint user (Voice only) and it works pretty good for the price I am paying.
Given the choice though, I'd take Verizon for Wireless Broadband.

BTW, the reason Cingular has the fewest dropped calls is because you can't drop a call you can't make

So true. I had AT&T Wireless free2go prepaid analog service which worked quite well even in rural areas. After Cingular brought AT&T Wireless they replaced that service with their digital GO phone service.

Since I was an existing customer I was able to stay with the AT&T service until my phone died. So the new phone ended up with the Cingular prepaid Go service which was supposed to be the same but totally sucks.

It shows on the map that it is supposed to work in Orange County, NY but does not work anywhere north of Rockland county.

ATT had GO Phone before it was even part of Cingular. Cingular just took over maybe what 2 years ago? and ATT had the GO Phone in 2003 under ATTWS

Re: Interesting Results

But the benefit of Sprint is twofold. Good coverage AND good policies. If your engineer friend starts doing remote broadcasts, Verizon may cut him off.
