Not a replacement for a "real" phone or SIP phone.

I would not use it as a replacement for my POTS, my main VoIP or my cell phone, but there are times where Skype is just the right thing. And no, you are not necessarily tethered to your computer when you use it (although it does take a bit of effort or $ to break that dependency).
Before you get all excited by phone service for $15/year, though, notice that this calling plan gives you calling out capability, but not the capability to receive calls from another POTS phone or from another VoIP service. You can only receive calls coming in through Skype, or through the extra cost SkypeIn service (approx. $40/year).
This is basically the pay version of the free calling to the US and Canada from US and Canada IP addresses that has been in effect since earlier this year. No longer free after December 31. It might get end up being rolled into SkypeIn subscriptions though so you might want to check that out first.

Exactly... When you factor in SkypeOut, SkypeIn and some hassles of dealing with Skype's proprietary technology, then that $8/month ($199 for 2 year) Sunrocket deal that sometimes floats around, gets better and better...

Skype has it's uses, but sometimes it's better to spend a little extra and get something more reliable then penny pinch yourself into a situation which will give you nothing but headaches later on...

Let's do the math here.

Right now I can buy a full year of unlimited OUTGOING Skype for $14.95. Add to that a full year of unlimited INCOMING for $38. That is less than $53 for a whole year! A little over $4 a month.

SunRocket has constant outages and service problems. I can't recall the last time Skype has been down.

I can't believe all the whiners about Skype not being SIP-compliant. Are you all a bunch of open source Linux nuts or what? There are a plethora of boxes to use your existing equipment with Skype.
