icepop456 : Yes, I've been doing this for over a year now. This isn't new. What I mentioned earlier still applies. If you try to export the MPEG transport stream via firewire while tuned to HBO or any other HD plus channel, you'll get nothing out. The 5C handshake does not authenticate your PC regardless of Media Center running or not.

Also, this is for stream capture, you cannot get files off the hard drive as if it was on your network (which I would truly love).

Now this looks promising:

-Tim

icepop456 : It is way more complicated than cable card 2. The best case I hear is that they'll make a PC with a cable card slot built in. There is no way any cable provider will grant your PC control of all the channels. They do not want you to be able to save any encrypted (5C) channels outside of 5C-compliant hardware (DVHS, eSATA drives etc).

To get HDTV from patriot media, you would need a QAM tuner for your PC. They do exist. However, they do not work with Media Center. You could do a few work arounds. I think you may be able to use the XP part of that machine and run your own TV scheduling program. Have it save the files as TS format. Use HDTVpump to get windows to know the file type and install a quality MPEG decoder (nVidia purevideo works well). Now point the Media Center at that directory and it should find all the shows recorded as individual files.

Until Microsoft supports QAM tuners, Media Center is not a solution. From what I hear, the problem is similar to VFW/WDM drivers we had to fight with back a few years ago.
