Currently I am classified as a '20' level subscriber with 8 mbps down and 512 kps up. Do you have any information on whether this area is included in the upgrade you mentioned? Where did you get the information you are referring to?

I just spoke with two different Roadrunner technicians by phone and one representative by online chat and they don't seem to have any definite information on this. One technician did say he had seen some info on a possible upgrade at this time for areas like Redlands, Hemet, Redondo Beach, and West LA.

I was an Adelphia customer before, on the Premier tier, and constantly recieved 5Md down +/- depending on normal factors (time of day, ect). I have the Premium with RR now and barely break 3Mb :( I've had 2 techs out here, both of which didn't know anything about data services. One tech said I was all set because my download speed is above 1Mb and that's all the local office here was concerned with. As soon as he left, I called back to tech support and requested another technician who at least tried to troubleshoot. I can't imagine it's hardware related though, since my speeds were perfect before. Well.... there are limits, but at this moment it comes down to router processing power, and not so much how much data we can cram on a piece of fiber. They have already proven that a single line of fiber across the USA can handle multiple TERAbits/s, and we already have backbones in place that can handle that.

For a home situation, if you have a state-of-the-art computer with a Serial ATA drive, that drive can write and read at speeds of 1.5 Gbit/s, so at this moment it would not make any sense to have a connection faster then that. (Although of course one could have more then one computer)

As far as cable and DSL technologies go:

DOCSIS 3.0 is able to transmit data at 160 Mbps up and down in the maximum theoretical speed configuration. It is not unthinkable that in 5 or 10 years from now, we actually will have 10 Mbps upload and 50 Mbps download on cable networks to subscribers, without having to move to fiberoptics.

DSL is more limited on the copper spectrum and has distance limitations. Thats the main reason why telco companies are thinking fiber for the future, and also the main reason why AT&T's Uverse (which brings fiber to the node, but NOT to the home) is still limited to 6 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up because they want to cram HDTV on the same line as well.

Cablecompanies will be able to use copper in the next 10, 15 years without any problems. Most cablenetworks already bring fiber to the block, and if you have digital cable television service available to you, fiber is probably already coming into your node and will be less then a mile away from you.

Telcocompanies will have to bring fiber a lot closer to homes to get the big speeds. DSL2 can deliver up to 24 Mbps within a mile distance of a fibernode, but after that distance becomes a real problem. Uploads are still very limited on DSL, but cable isn't much better at this moment because of DOCSIS 1.1 which can only do about 4 Mbps upload max.

I mean as far as I know, your the average cable modem sold on the market can handle up to 40 Mbps download speed maybe more if the companies of updated there firmware. I don't know that many cable modem makers that actually allow you to update the firmware of the cable modem but I guess there are some out there. A Linksys cable modem can't have it's firmware upgraded I know that for sure, unless someone here would like to tell me different. Don't worry, your speeds will hopefully be there soon, hell I've been waiting for a year and three months for this to happen and it finally did, so you should have yours upgraded sometime soon as well. I think you'll know when you have it, like if you do a speed test at www.speedtest.net and lets say you have a 5000 Kbps download and 384 Kbps upload connection and your results usually come out to lets say 4928 for download and 370 for upload usually and you go and test it one day and the results are like coming out to something like 4940 Kbps download and 390 Kbps upload, you know somethings going on. My cable modem was reset sometime after 4 PM. The rest of the members of my household confirmed that the internet "went dead" and then came back about 15 minutes later on its own. Normally when that happen, I have to unplug the cable modem for 5 mins, and then plug it back in. None of them did that this time, so it was something TWC did on their end.

I did a speed test from speakeasy, and while it was nothing to get to excited about, my speed to to the Chicago server was just shy of 5 MB down. Upload is still around normal for me (about 356 kb). My normal download speed is usually in the 4500 to 4650 range, and this time, it was around 4950.

Of course, my gf's daughter is up on her pc right now streaming music from the internet, along with playing Runescape while talking to friends..I'm doing about 5 things right now on my computer that use the internet as well... So, that could be why. I'll run a test tomorrow morning when all is calm and see if anything has changed.

Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come! :)

Not sure if that was directed at me, but... Personally, I've had good experiences with TW support. Also, I have never had one of them try to talk me out of adding to my service before. Even if it's not on a screen in front of them, people do talk at their work and trade info.
Regarding the 10Mb bottleneck, that's why I also questioned it.

Earlier today I called Time Warner to get an upgrade to Premium and the rep actually talked me out of it. She said there is a significant upgrade coming soon. When I pushed her to find out how soon she replied, "Very, very soon. Any day now." She also said she thought it would top out at at least 8 for standard service. She did not know about the upload speed.

A few weeks ago, before finding this thread, I called their Tech Support about Premium and was told that in Austin we won't see anything over 10 any time soon because their modem is a bottleneck. So my modem went offline last night around 10:30PM and when it came back up I lost about 2000kbps off my download speed. I'm Extreme tier from Adelphia and this is what I was getting for the month before since I was transitioned.

After the modem came back to sync the first thing I did was do a speed test hoping my area got a speed upgrade. This is what I've been getting since 11PM last night.

So what gives? They took away my precious overhead on my Adelphia upload speeds and now I lost 2000kbps on my download? Was there some overhead taken away on the download speed too? I spent two hours on the phone with RR people today just trying to get a simple answer as why I lost the 2000kpbs but they couldn't tell me anything except my speeds are where they're supposed to be.

Bandwidth service class (028) (don't remember if it was different before)

I hate to say this but my speeds (basic) are a little better than what I had with Adelphia. Of course, I quit using their DN servers some time ago and use OpenDNS now. However, due to the fact that all my utilities are underground, when it gets wet, my speeds seem to drop dramatically. I believe my underground cable trunk is about 32 years old now.

This morning I powered off my router and the cable modem, and kept it off for 5 minutes. I then just plugged one of my machines into the router, and powered on the cable modem, and then the router.

I then did the speed test shown below

So, no change yet. Hopefully, things will happen soon here in Kenosha!

Things are probably different in different regions... Your on the other side of the U.S. In rochester, far as I know there is...

Heh, I don't watch much TV so I just got the $7/month cable with like 25 channels. It would be $10/month cheaper if I had basic cable. I can't see paying $60/month for cable when I wouldn't use it really...

I also agree that RR has been rock solid, In the two years I've had them, I've had one outage due to a pinched cable, because of the settling of my concrete driveway, a tech was out here the next morning (Easter Sunday) ran a new cable from the pole to the main connection point in the garage. And I had an occurrence of massive slow downs due to a failing modem, which was also replaced the next day. Those are my two issues with RR, neither one was their fault, but I did however get a free month for the first incident.

Which brings me to another point, if TW sucks so bad, why is it their policy to give you full invoice credit if you have an outage that lasts more than 4 hours, and if you are not happy with service appointment or if the tech shows up late you get $20 credit. That right their shows me they believe in their own service, and I believe in them.

And Stray Bullet, if you want faster upload RR Premium is always available, 1Mb up. That I believe is the fastest consumer upload speed available in the Rochester/Finger Lakes region. Does Frontier have anything that fast, if not they suck.

Nothing. The newer Motorola modem (and other makers modems) firmware is configured to not show config files, server IP addresses, and some other info in the quest for tighter security.

And your speeds seem right on the money to me. Your standard Ohio service just hasn't been upgraded yet. Although I don't actually see why switching is so bad. You've got 3 PCs in the home, but can't switch to DSL, and you hate TW? DSL providers do offer more than enough upload speed for 3 gamers. All you need is 256kbps up...

It used to be simple when Road Runner was 5/384 and 8/512 but now some areas are getting boosted up to 10Mb, some only 7Mb and upload speed upgrades are inconsistent from one franchise to the next. If your area got the speed increase, please post the new speed for both Road Runner and Road Runner Premium.
