Or the previous user was a game player, and listed his system as an online game server. As a result, that IP address is listed as a server of some kind, and this results in various attempts to connect to the IP.
darogl : Actually, it can't be related to my computer because when I unplug the router, the modem is no longer connected to it. I can also disconnect the ethernet cable between the modem and the router so the modem is not connected to anything and the activity light will continue to flash for 4 or 5 minutes. It gradually slows down and then stops. I was wondering if there's something going on with the modem. The flashing isn't all the time, just occasionally.

darogl : I've had a DSL connection with a 5100a modem for several years now with no issues in particular. But for the last couple of weeks, I'll sometimes look over and the activity light on the modem will be flashing when nobody's logged on. This isn't the occasional flash like I'm being pinged. It looks more like there is some activity going on. I do have a Linksys W54G router so my first thought was that someone was using my wireless signal. However, even if I unplug the router, the activity light will continue to flash. Any ideas?
