Cogeco are in the process of rebuilding their system in Kingston. You may be in an area that is congested. Call them and book a service call. I did this for my mother and they replaced the modem (com21) but said that she'd have to wait til after the rebuild is complete in a couple of weeks in her neighbourhood for speeds to increase. My mother lives in Reddendale area and was only getting 1Meg service on the standard package. |

Can you IM me the modem mac? (bottom of the modem starts with a 00)
Ill run some tests and see if I can give you any advice. |

Hi ell, you can PM me your cable modem mac (found on a sticker on your modem) and I'll take a look.
(NOTE: To all others...sorry to all that I've been missing for a bit, just busy and then vacation. I'm trying to catch up now so if I left you hanging then PM me with details) |

said by ell:today thay were working at the pole and that told me that the upgrade for my area is now complete. so when i did a speed test "getting better" now is this the best im going to get?? Ok I'm confused as I've been watching your connection for a while (another employee passed on your modem mac) and I'm watching you *right now* download at 248KB (2036000 bits) per second. I also see no RF issues on your modem, street, node and there are no congestion issues (there's actually a bunch of headroom there). Yes there is a rebuild going on but that's not going to make a difference as you have no RF or network issues. I suspect your issue lays with either your system, router or home network and most of my nickels are on your router and/or the overall bottleneck caused by usage going through your router. I'm not trying to fluff you off, as always my goal is to help you fix the issue but the issue isn't on Cogeco's end in this case so we can give you new modems and have techs visit you and everything else but it's not going to fix your issue, try troubleshooting your home network...maybe someone is compromised and utilizing lots of bandwidth or something. So, to recap, here is what I'm seeing *right now* (4:59 PM 1/9/2007) Total DS Throughput: 1672000 bits/sec, 140 packets/sec (aka: downloading at 204KB) |

my Kid's were watching on line videos. now I'm confused by that speed 248KB ??? since the work at the pole speeds have been 1800kbps to about 3500kbps why would that confuse you? I'm not trying to be rude i don't understand! advertised speed up to 10mbps is 248kb close to that ?? as for my network why do you think i have a problem there my router its wired not wireless? |

said by ell:since the work at the pole speeds have been 1800kbps to about 3500kbps I just looked at your modem yesterday so no idea what was going on before but as of yesterday there are no RF or network issues at modem, street or node level. said by ell:I'm not trying to be rude i don't understand! advertised speed up to 10mbps is 248kb close to that ?? Your download speed is also impacted by the remote end, (ie: the site you're connected to), if their maximum bandwidth is 200KB then it doesn't matter if you have 40MB down all you're going to get is 200KB. Try FTPing files to and from your » home.cogeco.net/~(yourusername) webspace (from system connected directly to the modem bypassing any router)as this may give you a more accurate indication of your speeds. said by ell:as for my network why do you think i have a problem there my router its wired not wireless? It's irrelevant if your router is wired or wireless, it could still be creating a bottleneck, for example I had a DLink 624 router with buggy firmware that would queue packets if I was doing alot of simultaneous up/down traffic which resulted in VERY slow speeds for me. I eventually replaced the router and voila! speed issues gone. Additionally, as I mentioned, if one of the systems on your network happens to be infected it could be congesting your internal network. The reason I suggest looking at your router and home network is that I see no issues, RF, network or congestion related when I'm looking at your modem...if I could do something I would but I see no reason why your speeds are suffering so it's logical to look at aspects closer to you which include router, home network and your systems. |

i have tried to upload to home.cogeco.net/~ but could not get it to work have not used ftp in years but I tried a line test without router » /lineq ··· /2162627and with router » /lineq ··· /2162636can you tell anything from this ?? also I use newsgroups alot and for faster speeds » www.giganews.com/perform ··· nce.htmlthere speed test before aug always speeds from 6 to 8mbs now I'm lucky if i can hit 3mbs. i have hooked each of my computers up directly to modem same speeds also ran virus scan on all computers and they were all clean also ran spybot clean. One thing i did find is my router WAN is 10mbps so i can understand not going over 10mb. if i replace my router whats the best one out there at the computer store they told me that start at $30.00 up to $599.99 and i don't want to buy junk that will make more problems or with things i will never use on it also thanks for trying to help!! |

said by ell:i have tried to upload to home.cogeco.net/~ but could not get it to work have not used ftp in years It's really easy, I can either give you instructions on how to do it and help you get it going or I can throw a big file up there somewhere so you could download it (just better if you do the FTP as then you can test both down and upload). Not much outside of the fact that your router filters ICMP...some people think this is a security thing, I personally don't but either way not a big deal. Only problem is that it's off our network and out of control so hard to use that as a gauge. We like to use Cogeco stuff as we have more visibility and control over that to help pinpoint the issue. said by ell:i have hooked each of my computers up directly to modem same speeds also ran virus scan on all computers and they were all clean also ran spybot clean. Well that sounds good but just for the sake of saying it...not all security services can detect all threats. On a daily basis I deal with a multitude of customers that have security services that say they're clean when I have proof positive that they are infected, lots of reasons for that but really a thread for the security forum (if there's not several on it already). said by ell:One thing i did find is my router WAN is 10mbps so i can understand not going over 10mb. Do you understand that it's not even going to give you 10MB? There's overhead associated with TCP so you'll never see 10MB with a 10MB router. said by ell:if i replace my router whats the best one out there at the computer store they told me that start at $30.00 up to $599.99 and i don't want to buy junk that will make more problems or with things i will never use on it Personally I'm a Linksys fan, no idea what the newest and greatest is but maybe the folks in the networking forum can offer better advice then I. said by ell:also thanks for trying to help!! Anytime, hopefully we can all help you get up to speed sooner rather then later. |

(home.cogeco.ca/~example/) worked great downloaded that software uploaded a 3.3mb text file and downloaded the file 3 times with and without router. with router my top speed 182Kbps up/328kbps down and with router top speed 183Kbps up/306Kbps down. with or without router not much difference i was hoping it was the router easy fix. I'm still going to replace it thow. i did the test at 6pm on Friday so this might have slowed things down don't know? |

Nah, you should definately be getting higher then that when connected directly to the modem...that's what you get when you drag the file FROM the FTP server TO you PC right? |

To add my voice... I'm also in Henderson place, have had speed issues since Oct last year. Have had techs out, first said it was my line, replaced that, second said it was a broader network issue, they fixed that, got decent speeds for 3 days in december, and then back to slow :) Just called tech again and he said there was no latency or packet loss to my modem, so I should replace that. I just replaced it and still getting the same speeds both connected directly to the modem, and through my router. I'm maxing out at ~400KB/s from cogeco's own usenet server. Before all this went down I was getting 1.3MB/s. Any help would be gratefully accepted as I think I've tapped the resources I've been dealing with dry :) Here's my AA form: 1)What, specifically, is your issue? Low download speeds. a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent? no, it's all the time. b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc) 3 months 2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation..what channels? No 3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say? Yes, I've been through many techs. Latest tech says that the line to my modem is fine and that I should replace it. I have done so and seen no improvement. 4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?) - removed router and switch from the equation - tried multiple computers - upgraded all networking drivers - tested LAN speeds (all are fine) - had 2 techs out to visit - replaced modem - changed network cables 5) Info about you: a) What city are you in? Kingston b) What is your operating system? XP Pro c) What is your home network setup? Provide details. Dlink DL-604 router to Aopen switch, to 4 comps and an Xbox. Also tested with each computer directly connected to the modem, with different cables each time. d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occuring on all other machines? yes e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting? Yes - firewall on the router. I have removed it from the equation without any luck. f) Please supply a traceroute from you to www.dslreports.com. Unedited and in text format. (edit out your IP if you wish). hopefully if there's others with speed problems in Henderson place thay will post or call cogeco. thanks |
