My daughter just tried to order Dry Loop DSL from Verizon in Buffalo, NY. They had it no problem but added a bunch of strings. 1 year contract, Credit check, credit card...

Of course for $14.00 more, she could bundle a phone line and all of those requirements would be waived.

I had her work her way up the supervisor chain - she finally got a call back from someone in an office in NY City - they gave in and sold her Dry loop with no strings

Stinky telcos

They are probably worried that the line will be used for VOIP, and not through them.. while they have to absorb the cost of all that extra bandwidth while a 3rd party makes money. Its like going to the supermarket with 200 coupons for items.. they really don't want to go through all the trouble of giving you what your entitled to...
And it's 2007, they're about to get their way with franchise reform and everything...
