I do not know the full details on the network group's plans. We do know that firmware is upgraded when it is appropriate.

All I could get out of the Embarq guy was that they had "no way of changing me over". Only after I pushed a little further into the type of equipment did he mention adtran. Not sure he really understood everthing since he seemed to be relaying info from the engineer he was working with on the other end.

As to the quality of the equipment lets just say that it took them over 2 months of working on my connection to get it anywhere close to the 5.0 package. Download speeds for the first 2 months were around 2400 at best. After installing either 2 or 3 (sorry I can't remember the exact number) additional T1 lines and correcting a few other problems my service has been rock solid. Given that I live in a very rural area I am just happy to have DSL service period. Three years of dealing with a satellite connection was enought for me.

oh ok they told me the card would drop the connections
That is/was the case. Putting a card into mixed modes, interleave and fast path on the same card could cause connections to be dropped. That is remedied by running the card in only one mode or upgrading the firmware.

I may be wrong, but I can't imagine a DSLAM not being able to handle fastpath. It must be a shitty DSLAM.

Called Embarq yesterday and complained about lag/voice drop issues on my service using VOIP. Customer rep was very nice, however, I was told that since the equipment at my DSLAM was Ad-Tran there was nothing they could do to help. Current service is setup on interleave and could not be changed. Typical pings to first hop are running typically in the 60-80ms range. Looks like there is not much that can be done to improve my situation.

I am not sure about the support for fast path in Ad-Trans, though I know they can be set for it. All of them I have worked with though have been set for interleave.

doesn't embarq have 2 types of dslam's which i believe are ad-trans and AFCs
Embarq uses about nine different DSLAMs for various purposes.

Purposely, I am fond of Ad-Trans and Stingers because they use telnet.

Please correct me if I am wrong

right if they put you on fast path the you and the other users on your card will drop like once an hour or something.

it has something to do with the cards firm ware if you read here. what I gather from it. fast path should work after adsl 2+ is deployed

at least that's what they told me when i called and i happened to be on the ad-tran dslam which doesn't support fast path
That's it!! Thanks. That is what they told me I was on and that fastpath is not supported. So what does this mean? Does the line use interleave and they can't turn it off or does it do something completely different?

the ad-trans don't support mixed mode when they are placed in mixed mode they cause the card to drop the connections every so often?

the AFCs have no problem with mixed mode but most people on them have fast path as default

at least that's what they told me when i called and i happened to be on the ad-tran dslam which doesn't support fast path

Embarq will activate past path if you call in, ask for level 2 support, then say you have VOIP and the lag issues are causing voice drop problems. They have been told not to do it for any other reason(s).

I think Gray has far better service than I have out here in Limestone... I'm about 5 miles from my central office.
wow, consider yourself lucky, I live that distance from the CO, and there's not DSL traveling over any twisted pairs out here....

Anyway, my friend is getting around 80 ms ping times with Embarq...so I'll tell him about this 'fastpath', perhaps it'll help him out when it comes to online gaming, amongst other things.

Well they toyed around with me some... The first tech I called said he couldn't turn off interleave but that he could reduce the delay. He told me to give it a few minutes and then check to see if it got better. It didn't. I called back and got another tech. I got a run around and he finally said that my line doesn't even use interleave and that it can't be turned off.

Overall my pings are better than they were a few months ago. At least the line is usable but I have seen no improvement at all to my first hop. It's not as good as I had with Comcast but it is better than nothing.

Im in Gray, and a friendly tech here did for me....

But my first hop is still 40ms....but waaay better than 80.

I would cancel my account with them if they turned my interleave back on.

I can't get it enabled. I have already been through it with them to get interleave turned off or the interleave delay reduced... I finally got in touch with a tech who claimed that my line does not support interleave anyway and so there is no way to turn it off since it doesn't even use it. He claimed that they were using a "different kind of technology". I don't know if I believe him or not but my first hop is always about 37ms. Dslreports is never faster than 51ms.
