Hidden Features in BEFW11S4 Firmware v1.39.2

Hey folks. Ever wonder if there are some hidden features in the new 1.39.2 BEFW11S4 firmware?

I did, and I found two!

DISCLAIMER: DO NOT PLAY WITH THIS STUFF OR IT MAY TURN YOUR BEFW11S4 INTO A HUGE DOORSTOP! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW THIS INFORMATION IS USED. ITS COOL STUFF TO KNOW, BUT THE AUTHORS OF THE FIRMWARE PROBABLY LEFT THIS STUFF HIDDEN FOR A REASON.

For more information, check out »www.allaboutjake.com/befw11s4.html

Specifically, there are some hidden logging functions... and some wireless options that I don't understand. If you figure them out, let me know.

For those who miss the diagnostic logging that was in some of the prior firmware, if you turn on the System Logger, you get it back. Thanks jbordens.

Interestingly, the logging options are available in v1.38.5 of the BEFSR41 firmware...

The difference between USA and Japan WECA standards has to do with how many channels are available in the different regulatory domains. I don't have a clue about Default/TX/RX, though. Sorry

Can someone from Linksys comment on this?

I've never seen this error. It seems to me like a problem with REBOL or the way it installed. In case you couldn't tell, the log app that I provided was REALLY simple. About the only error I've seen it generate is one when there's already another app running.

Otherwise its really too simple to fail on its own. "save-user" isn't even in the code. "Unable to save settings" sounds like a file problem (no permissions, or even full hard drive) I dunno though.

I had TinyLogger.r running overnight, no problems at all.

I just tried it, and SNMP Trap Watcher is another alternative to my TinyLogger.r

It does receive all of the various different SNMP messages that you're interested in.

If I am not having any problems with Linksys, should I update the firmware?

When you turn on the extended logging functions, you get interesting log entries such as:

PPP Rx: [1], proto=c021 code=10 sid=21a5, state=255
PPP Rx: [1], proto=c021 code=9 sid=21a5, state=255
PPP Rx: [1], echo request
PPP Tx: [1], proto=c021 code=10 sid=21a5, state=255
PPP Tx: [1], echo reply

Does anyone know anything about what these are? I know that they're PPPoE realted... and that Protocol c021 is the Link Control Protocol, and Code 10 is Echo Reply and Code 9 Is echo Request... However there are more code 10's and 9's than "Echo request" and "echo reply" entries...

Also there are entries like this:
[00:17:04]: free=447

Its free something, but doesn't change much. Memory? Entries in the NAT table? What?

How about these:
sizeof( NV_data ) = 4264
Send: PADI,PoE Type=1
Recv: PADO
(AC Cookie)
Send: PADR
(AC Cookie)
Recv: PADS (session id: 0x2227)

NV_data? Non Volitle Data? PADS is PPPoE Active Discovery Session-confirmation, PADO is PPPoE Active Discovery Offer, PADR is PPPoE Active Discovery Request... what about "AC Cookie"?

Also, is the "-- connection established. (count:1, session id:2227)" log entry only for PPPoE? Are there other log entries for RAS? (or straight WAN network DHCP)?

I'd like to put together some sort of reference for people to look at and understand all this info coming from their router.

I'LL BE DAMNED. It's in 1.39 (Jun 04 2001) too. Sheesh. Been sitting here whining about them taking SNMP logging out of the firmware for months now and it was there all along, just turned off.

Thank You!

That is an excellent tip, just for the hell of it I used admin as username and my router password and it works! I'm so happy now we got SNMP logging to work.

I feel both stupid and angry at Linksys. How many times have we directly asked the Linksys techs about this and gotten no response, while it was there all along, just turned off? Grrrr. I hate it when companies do stuff like that.

I'm a happy camper again now too. Fired up SNMPTrap again and am off to the error logging races again.

Hmmm I wonder if Linksys Techs even knew about this. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they didn't. I'm running firmware 1.40.2, the latest btw, still have to make sure SNMP is logging.

Just ramping up to speed here.... I'm using the 3 port + USB Linky here... Reason I'm using the '31' model is because I'm connecting to computer via USB, not ethernet. I've printed out the links mentioned above, and haven't tried anything yet. V1.39.1 firmware in Linky... Anyone know if this model does anything different than what was posted, or have tried the procedure listed above?

Thanks... Jan

NOTE:

IF you use special characters in your password-

@ # $ ...

You may have to use the ascii equivalent to get it to work.

IE:

If this doesn't work:

»username:foo@bar#test@192.168.1.···nage.htm

Try this

»username:foo%40bar%23test@192.16···nage.htm
