jkb246 join:2000-03-18 Indianapolis, IN | This is why I'm not jumping to HD I was watching some HD programing at my uncles house and it's wonderful. The problem is what the NY Times said before the holidays. Not much to watch. Crappyvision just took off INHD2. That was the channel we were watching. What are they replacing it with??? SNY (The Mets don't start playing until when). Until there are networks with full 24 hour coverage HD wont take that final leap to becoming widespread. People buying 27 inch hd tv's isn't widespread uses. You need a 37 and up tv to even realize how wonderful the programming is |

HD will look the best on a CRT, as the plasma and LCD technology is just not there yet, picture wise. The only thing plasma and LCD has over CRT is the screen size and weight, and the whole "new technology" buzz. |

Cablevision didnt remove InHD 2, InHD 2 was shutdown by InDemand. The channel no longer exists. |

1 edit | I think I would put a CRT up against a DLP/LCoS as well, as far as picture quality goes.
I read an article, I wish I could find it again, but there is a new form of CRT coming out this year that will put CRT back on the map once again. If someone knows what I am talking about, if you have a link to anything about it or know what its called, please post, as I read the original article in passing and neglected to hold on to it.
EDIT-- I looked into LCoS. LCos still has issues with displaying black, and in turn can have issues with colors. Heck, looks like they are incredibly hard to produce as well, as several companies have tried, but stopped. I do not see that as a viable consumer option. »entertainment.howstuffworks.com/lcos4.htm |

BloodRosesAeolus, your daughter flies.Premium join:2003-03-17 Louisville, KY | If you've seen Sony's SXRD's, I think they are quite possibly better than my former Sony XBR CRT. Of course, I would have to spend a significant amount of time breaking it in and getting it closer to reference to really say. Hopefully this year I'll be able to. -- Cheers, Stephanie - www.GlitterFaerie.com |

fireflierCoffee. . .Need CoffeePremium join:2001-05-25 Limbo | reply to swintec I believe you're referring to SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display):
From the article:
"In an SED, every single pixel of the display is, effectively, a cathode-ray tube. The cathode is a thin film of palladium oxide, chosen because it is electrically conductive and also extremely durable, resisting oxidation and corrosion even at high temperatures. As in a CRT, electrons emitted from the cathode hit phosphorstiny dots of metals or rare-earth compounds that glow red, green, or blue when energized."
Their predictions:
"By 2010, LCD TVs will dominate in sheer numbers, though mostly at the smaller screen sizes. Gartner projects that nearly 90 million LCD televisions will be manufactured worldwide in that year alone and will be worth about $30 billion in retail sales. Projection TV production will grow steadily, with 14 million manufactured in 2010. DLP technology will take the largest share of the projection television market, at 47 percent, compared with 35 percent for LCOS and just 18 percent for micro-LCD.
Meanwhile, plasma technology will gradually die, a victim of economics rather than of its shortcomings, for manufacturers today are investing far more in LCD production than they are in plasma, and at the same time, other technologies are emerging from the laboratories. Manufacturers like Panasonic and Pioneer, which have invested billions in plasma manufacturing facilities over the last five years, will either become niche players or convert to another technology, most likely LCD. Although if Canon and Toshiba are really successful with their SED technology, it is possible that Panasonic and Pioneer will jump onto that bandwagon. "
LCOS can be difficult to manufacture, however Sony figured out how to get a good yield from this technology--in contrast to others who gave up. JVC apparently also figured it out but I'm told the quality of their LCOS technology is lacking. -- Wishes: When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. | Great article. I just cannont see CRT dieing the death some think. Your article even mentioned it as well, CRT's are still the basis for picture quality for the other display tecnologies. MOst realize that with CRT, you are limited in size/weight. Heck, I can not even move my HD CRT by myself, and it is only 31 inches. I realize people today and tomorrow will trade some picture quality loss for the convenience of having a wall mountable TV and one that can fit almost anywhere, and also one that is 50 - 60 inches. Which is certainly a shortcoming of CRT's. I can't tell you how many people think that just by plugging in the cable to there new LCD or plasma TV, think they have an HD picture, because "the guy at Best Buy said it was HD" or "I thought CRT wont be around in a few years cause the government is making everything digital." So if/when the death of CRT happens, I think it will be more so from consumer misunderstandings of the CRT technology. |

lovswr join:2001-09-15 Smyrna, GA | reply to swintec You mean SED..which is like many separtate crt's on an LCD..Best of both worlds...Real blacks, no convergence issues, no streaking, no color wheels, etc. Unfortunately the other CE manufacturers know that Toshiba is about to clean their closk, so it is tied up in court. Check avsforum for the SED thread. This will be tied up for years. |
