Well, as the article suggests, the primary difference is that they will be running TiVO's superior software interface.
Hmmm... maybe I was asking the wrong question. Ok... what would the Comcast Tivo box do for me that the current Comcast HD Dual DVR box does not do?

Well, aside from an overall easier-to-use interface, and what tends to be a more reliable and robust program listing/description system, you also gain some of tivo's more advances features. What most consider to be tivos "defining" feature is their program suggestions system. The tivo software tracks what you record/watch, and will suggest other programs you might enjoy as well. When you have 300+ channels, this can become very usefull, as there tends to be many programs you would enjoy, but dont ever see/watch, because they are barried in the mass of listings.

hope that helps, pnh102

Re: Difference?

Ability to network and transfer shows to a PC or schedule recordings from a browser?

As a Comcast customer who once had Dish.. the Comcast iGuide is a really poor ugly interface.

Wow, you don't remember what it was like (the old TV Guide Interactive), do you?

When I had Comcast prior to living in Mount Airy, I never had a problem with the HD and/or DVR service at all. I have the same box with Adelphia and the only problem I currently have is the On-Demand doesn't work correctly. As for the interface, I don't see it being very hard to use... I just press the "Record" button on the programs I want to record and they record.

We've got 30 days experience with the Comcast Motorola 6412 dual-tuner and have a love/hate relationship. Great HD picture but the DVR has too many software problems and this unit has the latest software. On the other hand no problems with Tivo after 4 years. Here are a few issues we are experiencing:
- lose sound while playing recordings (both live buffer and recordings) but can be recovered by a quick rewind/fast forward
- fails to record the entire show
- hard drive 21% full (3 hours HDTV), started recording show and within 10 minutes it claimed drive was full and forced us to delete a recording before continuing to use DVR
- small hard drive and currently no way to expand using eSATA, FW or USB ports on back of unit (yes I know about connecting a computer via FW)

This box has been in the market for 2 years, bugs this fundamental should have been worked out by now. And I'm conveniently overlooking how well Tivo works compared to Comcast box (e.g. 'loose power and loose programming guide for 12-24 hours').

We've left our Tivo connected so we don't lose shows that the Comcast box is suppose to record. I guess the apologists can say 'its good enough' but right now the box works like Win98.

While I hope Tivo software on the Motorola 6412 fixes the problem, that remains to be seen as I haven't used Tivo Series 2 dual-tuner or the Series 3. Assuming Tivo Series 3 works well then I give good odds that Tivo on Comcast's Motorola DVR will bring sanity back to our TV.
