I think that's almost true anywhere in the country. My friend who lives in New York, just outside of Manhattan, used to have Nextel. His service coverage was so bad that I would have to call him back two or three times while he was driving due to dropped calls. He got so sick of it that he dumped them for Verizon and has since noticed a huge improvement in his reliability and coverage.
