I dont think you made that link with the 12dbi internal antenna on the lil 8186 more likely with a 19dbi or possibly a grid using the N connector version of the 8186

I use all 8186's and for me the longest link I have made with the lil 12dbi antenna is about 3Km
as for reliable I'd say its as reliable as any other antenna out there.
Personally I would recommend to use the 8186 with the internal 12dbi antenna within a 1-2km range and it will work work well beyond that or with LOS issues I use the 8186's N connector version and attach it to a 15 or 24dbi grid then 16Km ranges are achievable.

I seems to work fine, just keep it for close in clients to reduce costs for your self.
