MS had full intentions of the original XBOX to be an IPTV box, but broadband was too slow then. It's now getting to the point where it might be feesable within the next year or two that there will be enough bandwidth at peoples home to make it a reality.
This isn't a "grand strategy", MS created the XBOX to be a media center in the first place. Gaming is just what they knew would get it sold and into peoples homes. To get a foot hold.
To be a media center box was their plain out in the open plan ever since the original xbox.
Oh, and Wii and PS3 are right there waiting for broadband to catch up too. It's not like MS is doing something new. |
