"a good justification could be made about the morality of dedicated circuit costs."
I would hope you wish to be held to a higher standard. If you use the bandwidth for resale and the TOS says, "no." then you are ignoring the TOS. Plain and simple.
Typically you can call up and with a little polite conversation any contract is negotiable. Give it a try, they can only say no.
That being said, dedicated access is not the same and as an ISP I am sure you realize that. |

1 edit | reply to Harte Step off your soapbox buckarooo, You are reminding me of my old History teacher Mrs. Ratburn with her finger waggling.
I'm not ignoring any TOS I'm not justifying anything, remember for 7 years I have been paying the price for multiple T1s. This type cable connection though is being used all the time for public bandwidth.
I know of Coffee Shop hotspots which are charging by the hour for cable access I know of many hotel's close by who charge their customers for Mediacom cable. They don't know or the cable company doesn't seem to care.
I guess as an ISP we are held to a higher standard. |

| reply to Harte said by Harte :...Also not the most honest thing, although a good justification could be made about the morality of dedicated circuit costs... There is NO justification to base YOUR business on reselling a connection that you do not have the RIGHT to resell. If you think the cost is too high then don't sign the contract. Many WISPs are able to provide service using lines that they can legitimately resell and some acutally make a profit!
There is no difference in this business, big guys always get a price cut! |

1 edit | reply to gunther_01 Hey thank you both for the replies. A little bit of new information there about Mediacom fiber. I can check on that on Monday.
I guess what I was saying is more like would we get caught? The reverse dns name entry shows something like ATT of course if you go to Airin the IPs trace to Mediacom. From what I can see there is no port 25 filtering. Of course you and I would know that it's a Mediacom connection but I think it would be unlikely if Mediacom would find out unless someone reported you. Up to a certain scale on a small time micropop I know there must be wisps reselling these kind of circuits don't really expect anyone would admit it. Also not the most honest thing, although a good justification could be made about the morality of dedicated circuit costs Seems like the pricing model for legitimate bandwidth is set right at the point where the big guys always make the money and keep us little guys all struggling. |

| reply to Velosity According to my Medicom lady, You can't resell the coax service. You can however resell their fiber services. They only offer 5 meg cable service here. I would check with them if you are on a newer fiber to the home plan if that is what you have.
Hence my T-1 instead of them, I tried here also.. |

| reply to Harte You will have to make sure that Mediacom will adjust their TOS as it most likely restricts reselling the service. When you deal with a cable company also remember that they are new to the carrier grade ISP game when compared to the Bell's. We have private fiber from Charter and while the price is good.....we have had allot of ridiculous problems. We were completely dead for about 48 hours at one point due to a BGP config error at their NOC, as well as many other stupid issues. Long story short they violated their SLA within a couple months of my 5 year contract. With cable modem you also have possible RF issues. |

| We have a pair of bonded T1s 3mb up and down. Have been paying the price for years now it has come down some but still very expensive. Yesterday I got a mediacom vip connection, it's just out. 14mbps down 1 mb up according to speak easy. A fraction of the price. Has anyone got away with reselling such a connection?
Another thing I find funny that cnet spead test,-- one of the top returns on yahoo, shows this connection 800kbps down the same one speak easy shows at 14mbps down.
I sure would like to pipe this to our wireless customers and start to make some money. |
