but I think the prognostication about this phone being a flop is a little shortsighted. I wouldn't use it because it doesn't fit my needs. However with the amount of people who have razors, chocolates and other IMHO poorly thought-out /working phones, I can't see calling this ones popularity "shaky" because of a few missing features.
What I (and BBR users) like/demand in products and what the general masses buy are often very different... |

I think the masses however will avoid this phone due to the $500-600 price tag plus being chained to Cingular for two years; I know that is the reason I am. |

I'm on Cingular (came over from AT&T) and I have no problems with them. They have great service everywhere I go, have good phones, and have reasonable prices. (NOTE - Your milage will vary). But the $500-$600 price ON TOP OF a contract is just WAY to expensive. My question is, why didn't Apple put UMTS and HSDPA support? Cingular already has a device that WILL support it for less money. I don't mind using the Pocket PC OS as I have been using it for several years. I currently have a PPC-6700 through Sprint that was provided by my company. I'm mainly saying, wait a while, the price might come down, and Apple might unteather from Cingular and go with TMobile as well. Apple said they have NO plans on making the phone in any other technology than GSM (which is a world standard) meaning Sprint, Verizon won't ever get this phone.

After owning a supposed "multimedia" phone, I won't buy another one. I have both MP3 and Video capabilities on the phone I have now, and I almost never use it. I never use the MP3 capability, and I rarely use the video.
I do use the mobile internet a lot, and plan on getting a Treo or a blackberry as my next phone.
I'm a self admitted Apple fan, but at $500 I don't see an iPhone in my future.

Where the $#%@ have you been? Mac OS X has been using Office docs for years. If there is anything to be limited on the iPhone, I would bet it will be cell carriers who will do it. They are notorious for that.
This whole article is hilarious. How can they possibly speculate on a handheld that nobody (much less the hacking community) has ever even seen up close? And while OS X isn't perfect, it does enjoy a reputation for being one of the most secure and stable OS available! |

The only way FairPlay is going to impact that iPhone is if users purchase content through the iTunes store - you can still fill the device with your own music and videos and there will be no copy protections whatsoever.
I, personally, am somewhat anti-DRM, but his complaint regarding DRM applies to ALL manufacturers who allow their devices to play purchased content. Considering the fact that the iPod is the leading portable music player (whether you believe they deserve that position or not) demonstrates that the FairPlay DRM is not stopping people from buying the device. How this author thinks that FairPlay is "fraught with problems" versus other protection schemes is beyond me.

Define "so many users." Up until now, I have never seen anyone using Rockbox on their portable audio players, let alone it being mentioned in a popular publication. Ask the average iPod user what FairPlay is and they won't have a clue - it simply isn't an issue for most users. |

The iphone isn't fantastic. I bought a dell axim 2 years ago and it plays movies, mp3s, and runs third party apps and games. Sure it's not a cellphone, but they have cellphones that run the same windows mobile OS. I can bet with 100% certainty that those phones which have probably been out for years are way better than the iphone. |

You appear to know NO teenagers. As a youth minister I have noticed that almost all my kids are using alternatives to iTunes. They dont seem to agree on which to use, but they dont like or user iTunes. The few that do use iTunes do so because they have some "reason" not to use 3rd party applications. Things like "My parents wont let me because they like iTunes" and "I dont wanna screw up my iPod" are the most common reasons. |

| The article was referring to replacement of the actual iPod firmware, not the iTunes software. I'll give you this - unlike iTunes on OS X, iTunes on Windows is relatively resource-hungry. If a system isn't running in tip-top shape, iTunes can falter. For that reason, I can understand people using alternatives to iTunes while on Windows.
I stand by what I said earlier - I have never seen any iPod user using an alternative firmware on the device over the past five years.
