Linksy/firewall problem

Hello all and thanks for any help.....
Here is my story...
I was using ZoneAlarm as a firewall, the free version for a while, then i switched to Mcafee about 2 days ago. I ran the Mcafee instalation and deleted 2 out of the 3 programs that i had to delete before installing Mcafee. The last program was the ZoneAlarm firewall. I clicked on the uninstall icon and it said some error, don't remember what, so it would not uninstall. then i tried to go into the folder and delete everything manualy but it said access denied, so i went into safe mode and deleted everything in the folder under ZoneAlarm. I then ran the installation of Mcafee and it installed. i tried to get onto the internet but i could not, i think it was because ZoneAlarm was still on my pc somewhere, because i could not get access to my wireless linksy-g router, like ZoneAlarm was blocking it..... i then ran a search, searching for anything about ZoneAlarm, it turns out there was a folder in the System32 folder, so i went into safe mode and deleted those files. Now, i do not see the ZoneAlarm file in documents and i do not see it in the add/remove programs, so i believe it is out of my pc.
I went onto the internet and was able to get on, but in like 10 minutes, the internet just shut off, but i could still use the internet on the main pc, the one with the modem. I am using a wireless linksy router and i looked at the router and it was not getting a connection, so i re-installed and i got a connection, but then it would not get a IP address. i don't know what i did, but it does get an IP address now.
My problem is... i can still can not get onto the internet. I open up the router by clicking on the icon and i see that it has a signal and i click on the computer at the bottom right of the screen and i see that it is sending packets but not receiving any. It says it is connected and i have tried to unplug the router, but it still does not receive anything, that is why the internet does not work, at least i think.
I am also afraid that somehow ZoneAlarm firewall is blocking everything somehow, even though i have deleted the whole folder, but did not run the un-installation through add/remove programs, because it would not run but now it is gone from that list.
Sorry for the very long message, but i really need help...once again, thanks for any help and i will not be able to respond till later tomarrow since i will be gone for most of the day so please come back and see if i posted anything more...
If you need anymore info, let me know...Thanks

it is beyond horrible idea to forcefully delete ZoneAlarm.
it installs bunch of files and registers them to the system. just deleting them does not un-register them or remove proper keys from the registry.

best i can suggest you is reinstall ZoneAlarm and then properly uninstall it.
if that doesn't work, try to reinstall tcp/ip stack
if that doesn't work, reinstall windows.

If you're using XP, can you do a system restore back to a point before you tried to install McAfee? If you can do that, you'll need to then reinstall ZA and then UNinstall it following these directions. It is most important that "Load at startup" is UNchecked in ZA preferences before continuing. Sorry in advance for the cached link, the actual link to ZA for these instructions seems to be broken:

»209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:KG···&strip=1

Suggest printing out the instructions before beginning.

Before Doing anything attempt a system restore to a point before you forcibly uninstall ed ZA & installed Mcafee.
Now enter the safe mode and go to the start menu right click on the ZA icon & go to properties, you should see something like this ("C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe") add a space /clean; (C:\ProgramFiles\ZoneLabs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe /clean) the save and exit.
Then Go back into the Start menu and click on the uninstall icon. this should remove the program.
If you get an error message try reinstalling ZA then repeating the process above.
Make sure Mcafee is off the PC.

You can not uninstall ZA by brute force, for more help see

Can you find the *working* link to ZA for uninstalling? There was always one to customer service for that. All I could get to work was the cached version off of google, the *real* link was broken everywhere I tried it. That ZA forum doesn't even have a sticky for that topic. It should be at the top of the list, lol....

The OP should read the link I posted (even though it's cached). There's alot more too it than just uninstalling in safe mode (in fact, I saw a few things here and there saying NOT to do that).

So far thanks for all your help, i am trying a system restore and then will try to reinstall zonealarm then delete it.....
i think you have missed my main question, maybe i just made it to wordy or whatever, anyways, before that, is it possible that zonealarm will block all internet access after i try to manualy uninstall?
Now for the main problem, i have a linksys wireless-g router with speedboost and it is getting a signal, but i can not get onto the internet. I opened up Local Area Connection Status by double clicking on the computer icon on the lower right of the screen and i noticed that there is no packets being recieved, but there is some being sent. This may be why my internet does not work. Is there anyway to fix this?
Thanks again and sorry that I posted so late, was snowboarding in Big Bear.

Yes if ZA isn't removed correctly it will prevent internet access.

IMHO that both problems are centered around your ZA issue; normally ZA will detect your local network (anything behind the router); to give these PC`s access to the internet the network must be put in ZA`s "Trusted Zone". If ZA is Corrupted it most likely preventing the router from connecting.

I have just finished restoring and tried to reinstall zonealarm, by just clicking on the install icon and it said some error like, could not load some temp folder or somthing. Also, when i opened up zonealarm, i saw nothing in the menu, only the STOP and what programs were running, i did not see any tabs nor writing nor anything else, it was all blank. If you need a pic, let me know and i will see what i can do.

It sounds like it is ZA Corruption issue.

If that will not allow you to remove ZA completly, the your best chance for help is here..

I have now tried to use the linksys as wireless zero and it still did not work. I now believe it is not the firewall, but could be wrong. I switched it back to linksys, and i get a signal, both on linksys and the pc icon on the bottom right corner. It still does not show any received packets but sopposily, from my friend, that does not matter. He thinks that it is just the wireless router acting up. Is this true? Or is there another reason why i do not get internet, since i still get internet on my main pc with the router. I have also tried to reset, unplug, the router and the cable modem, but still did not work.
Sorry for posting 3 times in a row but just wanted to give you some follow up.

It's most likely ZA having been corrupted by a bad uninstall, but to be sure, pull the router and hook the PC up directly to the modem, just to see if will then get online. If it does, you'll know it's the router.

You didn't say what OS you're using (unless I missed it)....if you're using XP, you don't by any chance have the XP firewall turned on, do you? There could also have been a conflict between it and ZA if you do.

I would try following the directions in the links we provided for uninstalling ZA correctly, even though it's obviously corrupted now. Make SURE to uncheck "Load at startup" before rebooting and continuing!

I have now compleatly uninstalled ZoneAlarm using...

»forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/boar···e.id=103

My bubble that says that a virus program is missing, now also says that i do not have a firewall. I get a signal in linksys but still can not access then internet. I still see that there are no packets being received.

Now what else could it be? Could it be that my wireless is acting up? or is zonealarm still not uninstalled? eventhough i did what the site said to do.

I have Windows XP home addition

Greenshadow

@aol.com
o, and i do not have the XP firewall on.

Greenshadow

@aol.com

One more thing, i tried to repair my wireless network connection and it gave an arror like this.....

Windows could not finish repairing the problem becuase the following action cannot be completed:
Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed.

What does this mean and does it help?

"Did you try accessing the internet on that PC WITHOUT the router, just to see if that makes a difference?"

I did and it worked when i plugged it into the pc directly, not though the router. Then i went back and plugged in the wireless and it did not work so i went back to it directly and it did not work.

So... it worked but then did not work the second time. Also, my Windows Security Alert says that i dont have a firewall on, so i believe i got rid of zonealarm. Now it must be the wireless not communicating with the router. Is there a way to fix this? without using the Repair option for the wireless, because it does not work, it stops at...

Windows could not finish repairing the problem becuase the following action cannot be completed:
Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed.

But when i am on the pc with the internet cable directly, it got to "Renewing IP Address" but then could not renew it.

Thanks for all your help so far and hopefully we can fix this problem

i tried it and it still does not connect or repair but now, when i try to repair it, it stops at...

"connection to the wireless network"

i still get a good signal on my linksys icon and a signal in the little pc on teh bottom of the screen, but still no packets recieved.

i have also tried to connect to a different router, one with no firewall and a very weak signal, and i still did not get internet. I used AOL as teh internet browser and it said that it could not connect to the internet, stoped at 1.

i have jut ran the program at support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 and i tried to go on the other router, my neibors, and i got onto the internet, but i could not Repair. I then tried to get onto mine, but it still does not work.....this is probably making everything harder, but i am trying to help

Greenshadow

I am on my pc right now, through my niebors router, and i am on the internet so that should mean that zonealarm is not on.(one problem solved) but i can still not get on with my router, maybe the router is blocking this wireless some how... is there a way to change that? without reinstalling the router, because it took me about 3 weeks to make it so it would work.

Also, when i had mcafee isntalled, for somereason it is not on my pc anymore, i think the restor erased it, i had the wireless firewall protection thing that mcafee comes with. Maybe that is somehow stopping me from going on the internet. But, i do not see mcafee on my pc.

Also, i tried to hook up this pc directly to the cable modem and it did not work.

The other choice is reinstalling windows, which i would not rather do. also i do not have the correct cd that is on my pc.

Could this problem be because of a virus? or a hacker that changed something?
