My little rant about Austin/Round Rock Property Taxes

So we had all this hype during the election about Perry's new plan (that passed) to cut school taxes, saving us all money at the end of the year. Well....where is it?

We have two houses, one in south Austin, the other in Round Rock. (Leander school district) The house in Austin has a tax assessed value, after homestead exemption, $45,000 less than the Round Rock house.

Now, you'd think we'd pay more in taxes for the more expensive house, right? Wrong. Just paid the bills. The round rock house, despite being taxed on $45k less, cost us 1/3rd more! The tax bill adds 63% to the mortgage. Thats just stupid. (we pay that one out of pocket rather than escrow, so I had never bothered to calculate it into the monthly payment)

And for the record, the tax bill on both houses went up from last year.

But the new claim is that the $1.41 per pack cigarette tax that went into effect Jan 1 will somehow lower next years bills. I'll hold my breath on that one.

{rant} (Me, too.)
Well, this was just another example of politicians lying to us. I was doubtful when they started their promises about "lowering your property taxes". Just like "the toll roads will be paid for with the tolls" and "revenue from the lottery will go directly to schools". Lies, all lies.

I guess we will have to wait and see, but nothing was to take effect for your 2006 property taxes. It starts in 2007 and is phased in over three years.

"“Because of their leadership, homeowners and businesses will save $15.7 billion on school property taxes over the next three years – enough to lower rates by 33 percent" from the Governors office.

If you want to read the entire bill , it is HB1 of the 3rd session in 2006. It is online but was too long for me to want to browse through.

[edit] I was treasurer of a volunteer fire department until recently which received tax money from an Emergency Services District. We approved our budget for the following year in May and the tax rate for the district was set by the middle of the summer. The county, etc basically have the same schedule. So it is obvious that a tax bill passed in May could not have any effect on the same year taxes.

The way the press releases were worded, they implied that it would take effect immediately. Maybe there's hope after all.

There are a bunch of dam yankees down here that want us to have both. The ones of us that have been here a long time keep boilin' 'em in oil when they suggest that.

Recently moved myself from the midwest. Even if you had state income taxes your property taxes are still much lower than WI and many other states.

Same thing with the hatred of the toll road system. Having a high gas tax just doesn't cut. Again, see WI with no tolls and IL with a toll system. Tolls can be a good thing.

Now I am done with my little rant of this rant.
