or maybe just post the patch on the website and let the users download it as the users see fit as is the standard for the rest of the industry?

Do you know how expensive for any company to run a rebate program? Charging $5 barely breaks even the costs of process the $5 revenue. Apple won't make much money of this (if any).

Of course, as a user you may have all kinds of reasons to get mad, but the new accounting rule is much less forgiving than a few angry customers in this case. Besides, some people are never happy about anything anyway...
