1 edit | Need help with gnet bb0060a I'm currently with Primus DSL, but I wanted to switch to teksavvy. So I bought a gnet bb0060a and while testing it out on the primus dsl service, it would keep disconnecting. I use a router DI 624, and in the log it doesn't report the disconnect. I only notice it because my pages won't load, download speed is 0 etc.
How do I keep my internet stable? I used what Primus provided me with which was the bb0050 which was simple plug and play and wouldn't disconnect....as often. I searched for bb0060 and all I see is people telling me to avoid it and a few who say it has worked great. Is there anything I can do in the config menu?

Did they pre-configure it for you?
If it was new and you bought it at a store that did not pre-configure it for you, you may need to set the VPI/VCI settings 0/35
I know when I bought one of these POS's for my mother-in-law that I had to go through the web interface and set these before it would work...

OK, have you called the ISP to ensure you receive sync? Have you tried attaching Internet -> Modem -> PC (Bypassing Router) then creating a PPPOE connection with the default Windows Dial-up utility to see if it's an issue there? Are we certain you didn't purchase a doorstop?

modify dsl config multi txatten 1 gain 7 txstart 1 txend 32 rxstart 40 rxbinadj enable bitswap enable maxdnrate 0x1ff
(this is a single-line entry from my 'commitedcfg.cfg' test file)
That's line-specific, euh... and 'DMT' is a lot easier to use!...

If you try tweaks based on the CLI TelNet commands
instead, type "commit" then "reboot" in the end...
The DMT part was tested before i checked my TelNet
one, today's numbers varry somewhat (19.5 -> 22 dB
Local SNR Margin improvement, starting with a non-
optimized 'commitedcfg.cfg' file) then my CLI fix.
My understanding is that i reshaped the juxtaposed
UpStream (1-70) and DownStream (10-255) bandwidths
of the DSL signal so that it will suit my specific
phone-line conditions better. It really helped me
a lot to use the 'DMT' utility while searching for
my own sweet spot; i'm sure there could have been
a few more variations to try but it already raises
my Local SNR Margin by 2.5 dB and lowers my Remote
Line attenuation level by 3 dB, with no noticeable
effect on the other parameters. Well, i'm puzzled
quite a bit, actually, because my TelNet test gets
a nice 4032/800 Kbps profile when it was 4032/256!
Hummm... Perhaps this is where the 1.5 dB SNR gap
between 23.5 dB (DMT) and 22 dB (CLI) has gone!...
I think i'll need to investigate this, eventually!

According to the graphic above you need to click on the
[On] button of the "automatic DSL-monitoring" field and
to check "activate Auto-DSL-Monitoring on startup" too.
Keep in mind that numbers which are right over here may
not be optimal for the kind of problem you're facing...
I'd say that Tx = 1 to 32 and Rx = 40 to 255 happens to
be the default configuration. You can try to sacrifice
some UpStream bandwidth to improve the DownStream side.

| Re: Need help with gnet bb0060a Tried out the settings you had in the test. I'm not disconnecting, but the download speed is very very slow. The upload is also really slow. I'm not sure what settings affect what. So, I'm not sure how I would even sacrafice upstream for downstream.

I guess the UpStream signal still has some room at
-1 dB, i'd try -2 or even -3 dB but the SNR figure
associated to it must remain above 6 dB. UpStream
speed can be made lower (i use 288 Kbps right now)
and, euh... Oh my God! 7808 KBps! I'm sure that
isn't your true DownLoad speed!... Well, it would
still be 4032 Kbps if you use bins #36 to #248 but
this device reacts slightly differently than mine.
If only 7808 KBps was real! I tried other numbers
for the "max. Bits/Bin" field in the "Limitations"
section but 14 was about right for me, i'd give it
a try once you found a sweeter spot. I'd say that
a practical limit for the DownStream bins would be
around #70 and #192 for the lower and upper edges,
respectively. I'll explain. Here's what i gather
from my tweak sessions so far: your "start" field
(the one associated to the DownStream line) can go
as low as 14 but as high as 70, if i'm correct. A
lower Start Bin brings your two bandwidths closer,
which exposes the DownStream signal to distortions
associated to the UpStream one; hence causing the
MoDem to disconnect more frequently - should noise
be your actual problem. Raising the Start Bin can
create enough void between the bandwidths to bring
the error rate down but you have to know that this
also affects the DownStream SNR figure because the
function between the number of bins and SNR is not
linear (it's probably closer to an asymetric bell-
shaped curve instead)... In short, the DownStream
bandwidth should have some clearance from UpStream
noise but not too much because the SNR will suffer
past a given point - SNR seems to depend on width,
the larger the better but too much of it and noise
from the UpStream band would be too close. As for
the DownStream End Bin, this one's behaviour seems
much easier to grasp: attenuation goes up rapidly
as a function of frequency and a point comes where
noise is predominant; the lower this edge is kept
the less attenuation (hence noise) you get - but a
lower End Bin would mean less bandwidth and past a
sweet spot the SNR goes down again. As i wrote, i
would have needed a graphic illustration for this,
i hope my long explanations didn't discourage you!
Finally, if you're goal is to obtain a stable link
and peer-to-peer performance, euh... i'm afraid i
could only buy you some time until a better fix to
your specific situation can be found. These tweak
trics only have marginal effects on signal quality
in the end, we may be talking about 2-3 dB here...

The disconnecting problem is only when I'm playing games online or downloading things with bit torrent. I purchased the modem off a member from redflagdeals.com, so I can't really return it. If I can't fix this, I guess I'm just going to get a speedstream 5360 off ebay. | |

An SS-5360 MoDem would be even less helpful than a
router that fails to report disconnections because
the MoDem's CLI simply isn't accessible unless you
happen to be handy with a soldering iron!!! There
are many more options available through my BB0060B
Serial-Port/TelNet CLI than the HTTP interface can
provide, i suppose yours is the same; perhaps the
CLI isn't right for you but 'DMT' (DSL Modem Tool)
version 2.19 might be a good start. I bet BB0060A
units use the same Viking CLI syntax as my BB0060B
model if DMT works as expected, which in this case
would be an incentive to explore the CLI (but then
restrain your enthousiasm because at least two ISP
representatives explained in our forum that GNet's
BB0060 MoDems aren't suitable for marginal use)... | |

when connecting your 0060 do all 5 lights come on and lights 2 and 3 (from right to left) flash (running from memory, I think it's 5, might be 4)

| The routers log doesn't show disconnects only when I use the bb0060a, when using bb0050 then it would show disconnects accurately. I don't really need all these fancy settings. I just want one that I can plug in, work with my router and not disconnect.
I googled dmt 2.19 but I couldn't find anything. The closest thing was a dmt that was in German.
The only way I can get to that http interface is if I connect the modem directly to the pc and then change my network lan tcp/ip settings to 192.168.7.2 etc... Is this a problem or normal? I cannot get to the http interface while the modem is connected to the router.

gather that you found it but failed to go further:

My BB0060B can be configured as a MoDem/Router and
a plain switch is all i need to feed multiple PCs,
simply turn the router into a switch by connecting
the MoDem's LAN connector to your router's 1st LAN
outlet instead of going through the WAN side. I'm
not certain if you'd need to disable something, or
if it matters since you require P2P too, actually.
Now, about the PC's IP address... I recall that i
didn't get DHCP support available by default. Use
an alternate 'commitedcfg.cfg' or 'commitedcfg.sh'
file if you must have it - i published two lately:

| Lights 2 and 3 from left to right flash... The rest are constant ...except for DSL link which whenever I get disconnected will flash. The DSL link light on the 0050 will stay solid under the same conditions I'm testing it on.

About one and a half year ago i tried to access my
MoDem's management interface via a LinkSys BEFSR41
Router; in the end, i vaguely recall that i could
access the MoDem/Router, the Router/Switch and the
InterNet. I may be mistaking but i believe i used
a variation of my previous suggestion for this: i
tied the router's WAN port to its 1st LAN (UpLink)
port then i connected my MoDem to the router's 2nd
LAN port. I can't remember what IPs were assigned
exactly but i'd say i had my MoDem at 10.0.0.1 and
the Router at 10.0.0.2 or maybe it was 192.168.7.1
and 192.168.7.2 respectively. At that point, it's
the MoDem which must handle the PPP session(s) and
that's where the 'commitedcfg.cfg' samples come to
play: they make my GNet BB0060B MoDem autonomous.
You would need to get the MoDem set as stand-alone
too in order to experiment with the later setup...

I saw your previous posts which talked about how the lines were marginal and that by lowering some values you were able to get a stable connection. How can I do that? Something about hidden settings...Is that why I need to set it up so that I can access the modem while connected to the net and router?
I tried uploading your config file to my modem....didn't seem to work. After uploading it wouldn't go to a new screen or anything and I don't think it changed any noticable settings.
The DMT is working....anything I can try with that?
This is a lot more work than I would've wanted :\.

The disconnections seemed to become worrysome as a
consequence of a 3008 Kbps to 5056 Kbps upgrade so
i simply attempted to evaluate my error rate, then
checked what cps rates i could reach using the DSL
Reports test tools. My intermittent situation was
probably resulting from a compound of factors that
included work/maintenance, and maybe even attacks,
but this is about all the clues i had so i made an
educated guess and just chose between the 5056/800
Kbps Interleave & 4032/800 Kbps FastPath profiles,
actually. I must confess i also used a second PPP
account in the end, in order to comfort my opinion
that it wasn't the signature of domestic line and/
or MoDem failures alone. Yet, this is nothing you
can't do yourself ("test@test" as DSL UserName and
"test" as DSL PassWord worked great when i tried)!
Once your MoDem can be managed like it should, the
door is opened to tweaking. For example, TekSavvy
has recommended an MTU of 1452 if my recollections
are reliable and i gathered that DMT might even be
able to adjust the local Signal-to-Noise margin...
My 'commitedcfg.cfg' templates will disable remote
management and enable features as DHCP support and
the FireWall. The router's WiFi service should be
available but that's only a start and there's some
good reading involved here, i suppose. The edited
'commitedcfg.cfg' versions may be rejected because
you don't save them in "Unix-style" (LF) format or
maybe it's having an issue with options which were
allowed with the BB0060B model only. In the later
case, you may need to verify the compatibility via
TelNet, taking the syntax variations into account.
Right now, taking a screen shot using DMT can't be
easier and it got a wealth of information already.
I understand your frustration quite well, Vif made
me buy my GNet BB0060B MoDem when i called them to
subscribe and no one helped me to configure it for
stand-alone mode once it stood on my desk - but it
could have been much worst should it have been the
SpeedStream 5360 model since there's no management
interface at all!... The BB0060 series happens to
be abundantly documented on corzoogle.com where it
is best known as a 'TurboCom EA130' clone, SolWise
had the SAR110 (one more clone), etc., the ChipSet
was even more popular in affordable DSL MoDems (on
portforward.com it's well known as a 'Viking II').
Oh... One word of caution: DON'T TRY TO FLASH IT
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNLESS YOU'D BE WILLING TO
RISK EXTENSIVE/IRREMEDIABLE DAMMAGE! That's quite
true of the BB0060B when attempting a DownGrade...
