| Tower Icing Pictures I am looking for some good reasonable pics of tower/site icing.
I am looking for some in particular that show what is called "rime ice"...very nasty stuff.
Post here or links...

| i wish i had a scanner to upload some pics from the ice storm of '94. we lost a couple 323 ft towers in that one.
we had several more go down that we rent space on, and quite a few customer towers. only a few towers in a 50 mile radius even with stood it.
our 180' Rohn 25 tower behind the shop was a solid block of ice. the guides had 4-5 inches on them, but somehow it stood.
i found out in '01 or '02 that a VERY thin glaze of ice on a sat dish will screw everything up. i had to make a 700+ mile round trip to clear ice off most of the dishes at our sites.

| Here are some of the WRAL and WPTF TV towers in Raleigh NC that fell after a December 10, 1989 Ice storm. All the ice is gone in thse of course.

| Re: I Found More That is correct. They protect the dish from getting ripped off the tower.
Last march or so my buddy from work and I went to one of our mountain tops to do some work. I saw an open bay VHF dipole snapped in half from ice buildup and having ice fall down on it.
Dishes either get torn off the tower, or if they do not have radomes on them (which is stupid to not put one on if you are going on a mountain site) the feedhorns get torn off.
I heard on tuesday that one of the sites that we take care of for some one had the solar panels torn off the tower from snow and ice buildup. The tech saw the frames that hold the solar panels on the ground, but there was not any solar cells to be found. They probably got buried in the snow or they shattered and then got buried. We wont know until this june or July when things melt. FWIW this site is about a 30 mile snowmachine ride from the nearest main road....or a helecopter ride, which is how the tech got in.

John has so little tower above the shield to build up ice that I thought they may be for RF shielding.
Since in my sightings they seem to always be above the dish (never below), I reasoned that they were for ice fall protection not RF shielding. Mind you, where I have seen them, they had considerably more tower above them than shown in John's pics and there was always antennas above them that might benefit from RF shielding. | |

They serve both purposes so that all works out. But I will tell you this...falling icing is a real danger to life and property.
Not only can it cause the tower to fail, but falling chunks can put you in the permanent "big sleep"...hard hat or not.
Remember, be careful out there.
