Well, when you switch local phone companies, all you are really doing is changing billing mechanisms. And, you don't have to switch unless they offer a lower rate than the local/ld/cable company you already have. For cable and long distance, that could be really subjective determining what is cheaper. If, for instance, they did not offer the Sikh channel. And for long distance, who can tell what is the best deal?

I do agree on the $500 cancellation fee, it seems kinda steep. However, you could just let the service sit dormant for a few years.
