need a 18X DVD writer that's quiet and reliable

I need help choosing a 18x internal DVD+/-RW drive for my quiet PC.

These are what I want:
- quiet
- reliable (low error rate, less chance of creating a coaster)
- performance (speed)
- compatibility with different media
- region-free or exists a region-free firmware for it
- inexpensive
- preferrably brand name

Any recommendation for a model or brand in general?

Thanks.

from what i understand, 16x is the top speed for DVD writing. with that in mind, Pioneer makes most of the internal parts, and their drives are the most used in the 'duplicator' market. I have had a Benq, and now a Plextor, the former died about a year after installation, the latter is still running more than a year later. my recommendation is the Plextor PX-750a.

That's the problem. I wanted to get a Pioneer, but the fastest drive they have is 16x. Other manufactures like Plextor, Samsung, LG, LiteOn already have their 18x DVD burners out in the market. Being a novice in this area, I am not sure if Pioneer is the best, so I am considering 18x drives first with the traditional philosophy that faster is better.

I really wouldn't worry about the difference between 18x and 16x to be honest

samsung makes some very nice, very quiet drives

just FYI

1x CD = 150KBps
1x DVD = 1,353KBps

with that in mind, a 16x DVD drive is 21,648KBps and 18x is 24,354KBps... not a huge difference really, not something i'd personally pay more for.

All DVD writers are going to sound like a jet engine winding up, especially when compared to how quiet a "silent PC" runs normally.

The good news is during your typical read usage, most drives (running 1-4X) are pretty quiet. No matter which drive you get, it will make a ton of racket at 16-18X.

As for 18X -- I have the Samsung. It's a nice drive, and matches well with my Shuttle XPC SN85v3. It really only maxes out at 16X -- with 18X DVD-RAM (unavailable in the US, from what I understand) the only media these drives can utilize at this speed.
