Re: Yep!

i was mostly talking about bittorrent downloads, as even in the best community (TL) you cant get a full 10Mbit downstream all the time.

No doubt!
But, how many of those HDDs can you fit into a CD/DVD wallet?

oh yeah my MacBook Pro has the DVI shit as well, and so does my TV, but what takes less time?

Opening netflix package and inserting DVD, or hooking up/booting laptop and streaming video from external source (as i doubt you are going to be keeping a lot of BD on a lappy hard drive) to your TV?

And if the BD players are expensive, I don't want to think about what a burner cost.

Uhm, don't know if you are aware of this... this laptop has a BD burner drive in it. Burners play discs also.

As long as everything is connectable just drop the new rented/bought BD in the drive and hit the Play button on the remote!
(yeah, laptop has a remote too!)

well, with that line of thinking, why would have they even bothered encrypting it? If there is a will there is a way, hackers and crackers prove it time and time again....

There really is no point. It's a cat and mouse game that the mouse always loses at.

Because they have no interest in stopping the die hards, just in making sure the "average" user is prevented from doing this sort of thing.

One reason, so you and I(I already did BTW) will have to buy HW that will decode it.

It's a vicious circle. I wanted true HD. I paid for it!
These Sony products *ARE* Full HD 1080p.
That's part of Sony's new advertising!

Even at 40 Mbps HD content is no where near "uncompressed".

HD-DVD AND Blu-ray use either MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (h.264/AVC) or VC-1 to compress their content.

Burning it and mailing it would be faster?
Plus, it wouldn't be maxing out your connection for hours(days?).

Yeah... and even with former Permaboost, 22 gigs is a heafty download

Also burning as it has been talked about is pretty darn expensive... sometimes even the cost of going out and buying it yourself! And if you have a misburn... thats a really REALLY expensive coaster.

Finally, HDDVDs and BRDs are not all that expensive. Ive seen them from 17 bucks to 29 bucks which really isnt bad. Plus, they last for ever! I know CDs start to fall apart after 10-15 years, not sure about DVDs but I am sure BRDs have the same problem.

Right!
Y'all are suggesting compressing it further! Screw all that mess!

The format that BD/HD DVDs are at right now, is the highest bitrate of any removable media to date(at consumer level)

More bits usually means closer to original/master, right?

Compressing these things to AVI would be like taking sandpaper to the disc. Yeah! I want to do that!

x264 is extremely compressed already as it is, I don't see any reason to compress it further.

Actually, the bitrate for those is much much much lower than DVD, this is how you can fit HD movies on such a low capacity disc.

More bits just means it's sampled higher. So to answer your question, no.

AVI is a container not a format, and it would be nothing like taking sandpaper to the disc.

But that's not an issue with the format, that's an issue with your connection not meeting current day requirements. Blame your ISP, not the format.

Most movies I've downloaded try to stay within the 700MB range so they can be burnt to CD. I've never downloaded a pure DVD ISO for a video, though I'm sure they exist. I can't imagine swapping BRDVD on the internet.
I think the short term piracy interests of cracking Blue Ray are for swapping over the internet, not to retain the quality.

Whatever, not going to argue discuss it with you.

If *I* rip a BD, it will be an exact copy(as soon as the encryption is cracked and I can rip it).
I will be using these rips to burn backup copies.

Anyone who thinks they will want to upload something this large for a single video, to anyone... knock your self out!

If anyone does re-encode it with whatever codec for the purpose of shrinking it, have at it! Not my problem, not going to be played back on my machine either!

I don't have to! I can play the original!

EDIT: Just incase anyone wants to see what's inside a BD - see pic.

...and I suppose you have a connection that will allow you to upload a file this size within a reasonable time?

We *ALL* need to talk to *OUR* ISPs, huh?

I have no need or want to upload something of this size to anyone.
I'll use a SD video for uploading, or even still burn that SD video and mail it.

You just want to argue, huh?
Tell me, do you even have one of these babies?

Not just blanks. I'd like to be able to easily afford a BD Burner! 25GB available for backing up my machine? Yeah, I'll take that!

Somebody wake me up when NEC has a BD burner for $40. . .
