| Spotty/small coverage area with current AP equipment - HELP!
To make a long story short, I have a 70' tower with a DLB2500 feeding signal to a 12dBi omni. I have spotty coverage everywhere I go. Line-of-sight links are perfect, but I get spotty coverage when dealing with trees. I realize this is normal. But, read this:
Another WISP's APs are available nearly ANYWHERE! I was driving back home with my DLB2519 (CPE "site survey equipment") pointing straight down in my back seat and STILL picking it up from miles away. How!?! I don't get it.
Am I missing a piece of hardware or is he just operating above the allowed limit? If he was operating above the legal limit, wouldn't someone (FCC) recognize it and do something about it? |

| You sure the 2519 was on auto refresh, and not just a residule from the previous survey?
And shame on you for driving and looking at your laptop |

+ 70 feet
= ~880 feet.
Very hilly area, lots of trees.
So it must be my AP height, then... |

| We have many hillside and riverside APs below 30ft height.
A 19dBi panel has good front-to-back ratio, so I will also think you were looking at cache of the RSSI web page.
However, you have taken other legitimate RSSI readings from your own AP.
Did you orient DLB2519 to match your omni's polarization? Are you using a 70' long RF cable?
Maybe your competitor is using a sector antenna?
Finally if you take careful RSSI and GPS readings at several LOS locations, we could analyze the results and suggest improvements. |

| What is the radius around the tower(in miles) you are looking to reach?
If there is one thing we have found is that a sectorized tower with a high quality sector antenna will walk all over a tower with an omni.
We use Deliberant AP's with Maxrad sector antennas and we get incredible coverage, and even very good coverage if we are within 2 miles (with trees in the way). Generally, we have 3 APs with 3 sectors. |

| reply to wlan_fanatic4 Tower coords are *approximately*:
38d 48'15.92" N 82d 13'08.47" W
I'm not too worried about coverage in the city because everyone has wired high speed, including myself.
My tower is above the tree line but I still have pretty crappy coverage.
But, the higher the better--right? |

| reply to wlan_fanatic4 It's possible they are operating above the limit. It's easy to get a 1 watt amp these days. While some don't want to hear it, the reality is that the FCC doesn't actively drive around looking for things like that. It will usually take a report of interference with a priority user of the band to get them interested. -- CCNA, Comtrain Certified Tower Climber |

The enforcement division of the FCC is overworked, understaffed and just has so much to do that the last thing they are going to worry about is one unlicensed provider ratting out another. Heck, The rogue FM stations transmitting without a license have them working full time from what I understand?. The best cure for an AP with a 1 watt amp attached to it is an accurately placed rifle round. JUST KIDDING!!!!!, although I am sure some of us are very tempted sometimes when we run into idiot's that have no regard for the law??. -- »www.wavecrazy.net Join WISPA today! »www.wispa.org/ |

| The omni was mentioned clearly in the first post.
I don't think the question is why his omni gives spotty coverage as the OP recognizes that is normal. It is about the perceived coverage of the competition. There still is no mention what height the competition is at and if he too is running an omni or sectors.
A 70 foot tower is nothing to brag about. If there are 60 foot trees, the fresnel zone would be seriously comprimised. |

More than that...be willing to pay in flesh and blood.

The FAQs posted by LLigetfa are really good. Most folks can follow the instructions and get it running.
There are several other postings here in this forum that will get you going.
