I'm not sure where this shot came from, but I had a few of those when I was testing the Noisemargin and ADSL Standard of Modemoptions. When Noisemargin was set above Minimum, I noticed similar blackout areas with a 300s delay. I have my setting at Minimum (my system won't tolerate even the next tick above minimum without those delays) and ADSL2+ (this didn't matter much). Note the attachment 1.

Attachment 2 and 3 are my settings from within ST5x6 system setup.

I hope this helps.

Thomson, under pressure from their main European customers
(who are ISPs over there), made their FirmWare 'DMT'-hostile
so that's what the 300 sec (5 min) delay is all about, exactly.

I think v6.1.0.5 doesn't cause this sort of behaviour in 'DMT'.

Can you show your MoDem Options since this is what the tweaks are about?

I have the attached screenshot just taken.

Do we have any info on the modemoptions? Can any of these be modified to further tweak the system for the better? I am not aware of what 00, 01, 02, etc. means.

Hi,

I didn't learn much about Thomson's MoDemOptions
because this didn't seem to work for me when i still
cared to try them but here's what i could get so far:

SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :), Bicephale, 2007-Jun-18

is it possible, Bicephale, 2007-Nov-2
(Possibly the "Spectral Shaping" and "SRA" bits)

SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :), Bicephale, 2007-Jun-18
(FirmWares vs experimental tabs)

Here's a post the guy who launched the ST "Buy Groups":

Losing Sync, TilhasBB, 2007-Feb-25
(The '0F' register)

I also read somewhere that the MoDemOptions may still
work up to FirmWare v6.1.0.5.0 (ZZQOAA6.105). For more
information you'd need to browse the British and Aussie
web sites (you'll find the references using my 1st link)...

Great! Well, i found the information you've
requested in a previous post. My advice is
that you get the file on disk but never use
it if that's possible
:

Home >> Downloads Root / mfcs_G / GNet / BB0060B ADSL Ethernet Router

Home >> Downloads Root / mfcs_G / GNet / BB2060 ADSL2+ Ethernet Router

You could as well have got want you wanted
from GenTek's site by following these links:

http://gentek.com/html/index.asp
"Support & Downloads"
"Online Public FTP"
"ADSL-Modems"
"BB2060"
"Firmware"
"3-C33GTT10-8821"
"Download Now"

The MoDem-Help site resquires you to be
registered while you need to contact the
GenTek guys in order to get a PassWord...

Hey guys, I'm wondering what I can do so that I can achieve a 1.7mb profile from Bell (My ISP is Teksavvy). I recently called Teksavvy and a request was put in with Bell and it was denied..I guess they said my connection would be "to unstable" if they set that profile. I call bullsh*t. On my previous ISP (MNSi) I got a steady 170k/s which is like 1.4mbit connection?? But now on Teksavvy I can't? Oh ok!!? Makes sense? NOT! Plus I play alot of games and I realyl can't do ANYTHING with 120k/s (~1mbit) download max... let alone my crappy 160kbits upload thats set right now.

Well after reading this thread I decided to get DMT and fool around. I put on the 6.1.0.5 firmware on my Speedtouch 516 (as I read this allowed all options in DMT). I took a couple screen caps. I played around with the Noisemargin in the 4th tab and when I set it to just above minimum my RCO was around %50, is that good? I'm not to sure what RCO means but I think it means the lower the percent the more I should be able to get out of my line?

Anyways here are some stats:

modemoption = 00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00

Not sure what else is relavant..but is it possible to be able to run steady on a 1.7meg profile from my distance to the CO (5-5.1km they say...) and with my line stats?? Help is much appreciated!

Hi,

The ST's MoDemOption feature never worked for me until i
moved so i'm an apprentice here but this is how i'd put it:

From the ground up!, Bicephale, 2008-Aug-30

FirmWare v6.1.0.5 is fine, i don't know yet if there's any
benefit in using another version. What i can see is that
bringing the "Noisemargin" cursor down improved my DS
RCO figure but this was done at the cost of a lower DS
SNR Margin.

Alternately, taking that cursor up i managed to make my
connection stable enough for normal use during disruptions
(i experience heavy noise on evenings); my DownStream
SNR Margin went up as my connection speed went down
(this is a trade-off which i don't think can be avoided)...

If you search back through my thread you should find an
animated .GIF demonstrating what this tweaking can do;
the date was August 26.

Oh, by the way! Your Error counters are meaningless
without a suitable time-frame. Twelve seconds is NOT
suitable at all so i must suggest you let the device run
for much longer than that (24 h is fine) and then it's
OKay to launch 'DMT'! Take note that multiple resets
invalidate the time-frame since we don't see when the
last reset occured. So, this means if you can't collect
long term records where the "Number of resets" equals
one then you'll have to settle for a shorter period but
it doesn't mean twelve seconds is suitable (unless the
phone line gets so bad you can't do better, that is)!...

dcman

@teksavvy.com

I did the setting you suggested for my modemoptions my RCO DS% went up from %66 to %68. My SRM went from 11 to 13.5, and my txpwr went from 16 to 15.5, AFTER I slid the bar up to were you have it. Is this bad or good?

Hopefully my modem stays in sync for atleast 12hrs or so lol, in which i'll take another screen cap. But do you think I would be able to attain a 1.7mbit connection on my line? Like how am I suppose to b*itch to my ISP and have them b*tch to bell that I want it switched for testing purposes when they immediately refuse anyways? FRUSTRATING!!!

dcman

@teksavvy.com
Also! If I bring the noise bar down to 2 notches above the word minimum, my RCO is %58...I assume lower is better?? Thanks.

Hi,

We get little control using Thomson's MoDemOption
and the matter of FirmWare versions remains to be
explored but i can attempt to testify based on my
own experience and then i'll extrapolate from there.

This capture shows the best RCO numbers i've ever
seen for my present line, i believe. It's confirming
my assumption that under normal conditions i must
be able to get on 6016/800 Kbps FastPath!!! Noise
obscures such a prospect, most unfortunately, but
it's not impossible that some day i'll get this solved.

Right now, it's obvious there are afternoons during
which i might have the best profile available for the
money i spend but, until only a few days ago, i just
hadn't realized i was able to restore my connectivity
on evenings using an ST + 'DMT' tweaks. Relatively
to our present case (yours), a DownStream RCO of
50 % or so may sugest that you have room for more
speed indeed but it depends on how quiet the line is.

Being this far away doesn't help it at all but i can't
tell more without the suitable noise curves anyway.

Back to my illustration, what i know is that i'd have
6016/800 Kbps FastPath during dry afternoons only
and i'm not sure Bell would leave it as is, indefinitely,
while the "latern" resources would keep warning the
phone company that my speeds vary in this fashion.

Maybe there's a similar option for you, maybe not...

I wish ADSL were made sturdy enough to fall-back
and "repair" itself automagically but that's not going
to happen on the Thomson SpeedTouch 5x6 series
if i can judge from what i've seen and read since i
bought my ST546v6, about a year and a half ago...

I believe the Siemens SpeedStream 4200 is able to
fall-back to 4032 Kbps during a noisy episode but
i could notice the connection wasn't as satisfying
as i'd like it to be. If this is how ADSL works for a
growing number of customers lets welcome ADSL2+!

In the meantime, you should consider installing new
FirmWare which 'STMT' supports so that long term
"noise" curves become an option... Once you got a
better perspective on how the line behaves you'll
gain confidence about what the next move must be.

Let me reming you that RCOs in the fifties would
be good news only if you have moderate noise, as
when living in sub-urban country-sides, perhaps.

Who knows, you may be lucky.

the 516 doesn't fully support the adsl2+ spec which is what you want =(

the ability to change profiles as the line gets better or worse doesn't really work yet... give it a few more years before jumping onto one of these units. I have a 3com whic his capable of this an its very rough getting the right firmware which is stable on it.

Automated (timed) tweaking should be good enough then, i
wonder if BoxFan (author of 'STMT') would mind commenting...

So basically their is nothing I can do because my Attenuation of 62 is to high???

Also, with my noise set to the min I have an RCO of 48%. But my attenuation is still 62...does that mean my line is noisy as hell and their is nothing I can do?

Hi again,

Sorry but there's no such conclusion in my reply.

The Attenuation level might remain immuable as a
rock even if you experiment with RF "chokes" but
who can say it's the case until it has been tested?

I do my best so that clues about the "Noise" issue
are provided by this thread and the one which it's
linking to, i published numerous illustrations there:

»From the ground up!

You'll learn that SNR Margin curves often failed to
describe reality, i can even refer you to old threads
where the spectral response envelope looks better if
the MoDem is located away from one's demarcation
box, using a long/cheap non-twisted phone cable!

I've discussed how the use of toroidal ferrite cores
as RF chokes may lead to some paradoxal results;
i can also show you a curve where one section just
looks great while its counterpart is some nightmare
come true and yet, in fact, the situation happens
to be different. Now, if some curves lie what must
we expect of mere static numbers which many of us
have seen changing by the minute!? My suggestion
is that you collect long term (24 h) "noise" curves,
it may very well open your eyes on the big picture.

It's not perfect, there's time & effort involved but
that's all i got to offer. Maybe others know better
but i'd probably call this gambling on your account!

My advice isn't to give up but to acquire a proper
perception of the context. The choice is yours, is
it worth my spare-time and yours? The content of
your next post will tell me if we can go any further.
