Hi,
Are you experiencing resets & disconnections?
You can try to upgrade the FirmWare so that the MoDem will only negociate for an ADSL v1 connection. The DownStream rate would still be comparable (6016 Kbps) while the UpStream rate should become 800 Kbps, which i suppose will take care of the bottleneck you've got...
Does 6016/800 Kbps sound acceptable to you?
The DownStream SNR Margin will most probably take a hit but yet remain within suitable limits.
The UpStream SNR Margin will certainly raise by a couple dB at 800 Kbps; this would bring more stability but i'm not even sure you really need it!

1 edit | I haven't experienced resets & disconnections as far as I can tell anyway.
What firmware would you recommend I upgrade too? I did have the modemoptions enabled, but was not sure what to change anyway.
Also what changes can I make in my x-wrt router, to be able to connect the one and only M$ box to the modem with DMT, without having to connect it directly to the modem?
Thanks chopp |

1 edit | Hi Chopp,
There's no reason to upgrade if you observed no difficulties. Your router problem appears to be quite common around here, the last related post i've seen was this one as i recall, actually:
»Access Modem on WAN
I don't use a separate stand-alone router myself so you'll get better advice from router owners...
'DMT' can be run under 'WinE' sometimes, the one application which runs even more successfully if using 'WinE' (e.g. Linux/OSX) is 'RouterStats' or its trimmed-down version 'RouterStats-Lite'. There's no spectral response graphic in 'RS' but i yet got to see it fails in a 'WinE'/Linux environment.
Addendum:
Euh... And 'RS'/'RS-L' is said to generate diagnostic logs too which may allow one to create noise curves but still no spectral response graphics, though... |

| reply to TilhasBB hello, recently i asked my isp [Acanac] to switch me from interleave to fast path, as i was having far higher pings than i wanted (over 50ms for just about everything). on interleave, i used to have 5056/800 down up and now i am stuck on 3008/800 after having been put on fast path.
i asked the guys at acanac for my line stats after this happened and they told me that my line was doing this:
SNR 14 down, 14 up Attenuation: 53 down and 35 up
and told me that i could not get any more out of my line. my modem, a versatek versa 170pr, was reporting:
SNR: 30.5 down, 11 up Attenuation: 10 down 4 up.
given this, i wanted to double check with another modem, came across this speedtouch and got DMT. here is what the modem gives me:

with this in mind, is my ISP lying to me/giving me false information? are the stats from my modem trustworthy? am i maxing out my line? do the stats even look normal? from what i can tell, my stats are basically too good to be true...
I've verified the stats on my friend's line and his line gives a far more normal curve, where the blue area is not practically flat, and his modem says he is pretty much using RCO ~70% for up and down.
in any case, if anybody can shed any light on my situation, it would be greatly apreciated. Going from 5 mbit to 3mbit is a loss of 66% speed. worst of all, pings have not dropped more than 5 ms.
thanks to all who input their opinion |

| reply to TilhasBB So...after 52 pages of reading...
What firmware number is recommended for those of us with poor connections? Downstream is 60db and SNR is 6.5, but I get 3000/800 sync perfectly, but hoping to improve stability (I disconnect a few times a day it seems)
I currently use the newest firmware, but I have a feeling there's better... |

| If tweaking is required then v6.1.0.5 is the last FirmWare available. Otherwise, try them all for about ten days each using this tool:
»Yet Another Modem Statistics tool
...then come back here in four months or so to share the result of your own comparisons!
Oh, and don't forget to save your log files!...

I was just taking a peak at my stats and everything seems to be up to par. If I think I should be on a 5megabit connection, do I simply call up Teksavvy and ask them to put in a ticket?
Do they generally just set up new connections on area defaults (i.e. everyone in K1X XXX is probably 3 megabits)?
Thanks in advance! |
