6.1.0.5.0 Open Original firmware
6.1.9.6.0 Disabled SNR and Line monitoring.
the 6.2 series firmware disabled serial and you can't use DMT tool or look at your line stats 6.2.15.5 is the only one I found available. |

l0thar join:2005-12-29 Far Far Away kudos:1 | I found a comment on the forums that the UK version of the firmware is a bit different from the global/generic one. They seem to place an emphasis on ADSL, the most common service there.
Same situation in Canada so far, so maybe we should try the UK variants?
The UK 546 model page includes version 6.1.4.6.
So you have been playing with the firmware back and forth?
How did you install the new one? Using the tool on the CDROM? -- Compare prices for Canadian retailers, Find 'Hot Deals', meet nice people at PriceNetwork.ca |

I followed TSI Steve's post. »Re: SpeedTouch 516/546/780 Group Buy !
Very True I read the same thing about the UK firmware. I would try it but between all 3 that I've tried I see no difference because my line is good. You should try it on your marginal line, where you would see a difference. |

TilhasBBFormally Goden99Premium join:2000-08-05 canada | After a few requests i've posted the inside of the ST516.
I take no responsibility for anyone who attempts this. I did so nobody breaks it opening it the wrong way. Push the power button in. Remove the two screws, DO NOT try to pry it open. simply PUSH the top part and it will slide back then open. You dont have to open yours, I already opened mine for everyone who's curious to know what chip was inside.
By the way, upon careful inspection I am not to impressed. look in the back on the bottom right it looks as if someone sprayed desolder and didn't take it off properly. I guess that sticker made in china doesn't lie. |

l0thar join:2005-12-29 Far Far Away kudos:1 2 edits | Ok, I am now back online, with the UK 6.1.4.6 version (found on this page).
Uff - followed Steve's instructions and links carefully, saved my configuration before the upgrade (Saves a TON of time reconfiguring it, just takes a sec.).
Having been burned by various motherboard BIOS upgrades in the past, it was a bit of a tense moment. All worked well, and I am happy and relieved.
First impressions :
- my Attenuation improved by 1 dB (now 51 dB).
- this version supports DMT, I wouldn't use a version that didn't.
Thanks Steve for very detailed instructions and links.
Tilhas, thanks for showing us the internals of the modem. I think the 546 might have an extra chip on the underside of the circuit board, possibly the 4 port ethernet chip.
The bottom of the 546 gives off heat that really seem to indicate some busy IC there.
EDIT : DMT support and SNR tweaking seems to be flaky on this firmware - I might have to restore the original.

l0thar join:2005-12-29 Far Far Away kudos:1 | said by TilhasBB:what do you mean by flaky? When you find your sweet spot in the SNR target. SAVE It. Yeah, I had my config saved, and reloaded it after each of the two firmware installs, etc. Using '10' in the register for SNR twek seems the best for me so far.
But the newer UK firmware behaved oddly with DMT - when I first opened the program, it would show the stats and graphs properly, just like in the 6.1.0.5 version (default that came with modem). Click on Refresh, and the graphs would no longer be there - data wouldn't come from the modem.
Tweaking SNR was not working well either, so I had to give up on my new Brit firmware.

Hello,
I was looking around at my stats and saw "interleaved" on my connection stats.
The red circle on the left side of the image does that mean im on interleave?
& the Red underline on the right side is that the max my line can handle?? Anything else you see i should know about?

Yes, you are on Interleaved mode. The max rate at the right is the number of ATM cells per sec.
You have 5Mb/s, so that's as fast as you currently can run on HSE.

 | Bah I don't want to be on interleave! ERR time for another e-mail. My isp even told bell not to put me on interleave dam Bell Monkeys Never get anything Right! |

TilhasBBFormally Goden99Premium join:2000-08-05 canada 2 edits | bryanviper> I wouldn't jump on the gun and call the guys at bell monkeys right away. If you look carefully you are getting some errors and your on interleave. maybe your on interleave becauase your line isn't as good as you hope. and your getting errors errors with bad boy SppedTouch 516. So with your old modem those numbers were a LOT higher. Something is very odd thou. I've never seen a line so AMAZING from the low frequencies and abruptly die after 550kHz.... usually its a slow going down. What is your setup like? from the modem to the jack and how many phones (what are they).
reload DMT and loom on the bottom right it should give you an estimated loop length what is it?
By the way did you fix your line ? if not you should take care of that first. »My OLD Wiring |

1 edit | here is a picture that I just took, hopefully its what you wanted.
When I take my stats my setup is just, DSL Modem --> PC (cant get stats when I have my router hookedup)
In this room I got the Modem --> Phone cable that came with Speedtouch modem --> about 50foot splitter or so --> Wall Jack. I also tried removing the 50foot splitter cable when i had my gnet modem and checked stats before and after but it made no difference.
Phones: Top floor: 1 Hooked up to Jack, older corded phone
Middle floor: 1 Panasonic 5.8Ghz cordless phone with 2 other handsets BUT only the base is hooked up to the phone jack.
Basement: 1 older Panasonic 900mhz cordless phone
1 Alarm system, I have tested this 2 other times with my isp where I unhook the Alarm from the phone jack but my line stats never changed so thats probably not the cause.
Thanks for the help
p.s. never ended up touching the wireing because its in such a small place i can barely fit my hand & digital camara in and my basement is all finished so I wont go messing around there lol Not to mention I would not really know what im doing.

TilhasBBFormally Goden99Premium join:2000-08-05 canada | Well its a different modem now and its completly different stats. you have one huge difference in the equation now.
For the fun of it. Try this. Connect modem at demarc point (have nothing connected, including removing the alarm) then do a line test with DMT and post that. Let me just see side by side the difference. |

| I have no way of hooking it up to the Demarc point. Those photos in my other post, thats my old demarc. There is no plug there nothing and even if I knew how to rewire it, its in such a small place that I cant get both hands in there that would be needed lol.
I could try without my 50foot extension from my office. Until I buy a laptop I cant really test by hooking up my modem to the basement phone jack since I don't really want to carry my 19+ monitor to the basement + computer. But I do plan on buying a new laptop hopefully in a week or 2
