All Phones Plugged In (Normal Stats) | No Phones OR Alarm Plugged In | Only Alarm Plugged In NO Phones |
I decided to do more testing by unplugging the phones and alarm system and so on. Here are the results,
The alarm does make some what of a difference.
Any input?

| Hey bryanviper,
Actually the alarm would make a huge difference.... you're talking data on data.... You need to install a POTS splitter at your demarc point so that it cleans the signal. You'll likely see a big improvement doing that going forward.

| I cant access my Demarc so thats out of the question Only thing I Could do would be install a filter on the alarm. But would the filter make a good enough change to justify the cost (whatever the cost is) of the Alarm filter?
As you can see from the phones, there is no much difference from when they are plugged in to when they are not, and they are all filtered also.

| It might not be much of a performance difference, but it might make your connection a little stronger... Judging by your SNR change when everything was unplugged, your alarm company's system was trying to communicate with the alarm box, so having that filtered away from your DSL data stream would likely improve things somewhat.... How much? That I'm not certain of.

| reply to bryanviper said by bryanviper :I cant access my Demarc so thats out of the question Bicephale posted a some detailed messages about your wiring setup. He thoroughly researched it and suggested changes, including wiring change diagrams. Which you should definitely try to do.
What you have on your phone entry point is a ground device with TWO huge resistive coils. Signal could be leaking to ground, and that's a couple of coils and resistive loads in the picture.
*Not* a good thing.
You mentioned access is difficult, but tweaking the modem will likely yield less than removing that situation and filtering your alarm properly. -- Compare prices for Canadian retailers, Find 'Hot Deals', meet nice people at PriceNetwork.ca |

Well the main reason why I cant access my demarc is because my basement is Finished. If I start breaking drywall and all that sort of stuff my dad will break me
Not to mention if bell was to come and replace that old thing how much it would cost and so on.
Any idea how much and where I can buy a good quality Alarm system filter?

| bryanviper> I agree with R0CKY
l0thar> Ditto
joshb> Nope
bryanviper> Maybe if its really old bell might make a new demarc point one with a phone jack if they do then just put a splitter and filter the house right there. Then run a Cat5e phone cable to your modem and ur set.
Pick up your phone, dial 5 and LISTEN do you hear any static? if so you can try to call 611. |

| I hear just slight static but never noticed it before actually.
The only way Im going to get that demarc replaced/fixed is if it was to totally die or totally mess up our phones to the point where my parents told me to call bell to get it fixed.
If its not broken then why fix it? I got 5mb right now on my line and its been working pretty good so far. SO untill bell upgrades us to something faster its not a big deal to fix my line at least not a major fix like that.
I think if I just do some minor fixs like Alarm filter, maybe remove my 50ft cable that sort of thing it should be good.

| Hey Guys,
I did this for a friend of mine and although the stats did get better, the stats still fluctuate wildly. Just rerouting the cable affects the SNR. Any suggestions? used CAT6 cable, crimped a rj-11 on one end and wired a outlet on the other...

| The weather affects SNR numbers mightly. Humidity is the worst.
These past few days have been not so good - melting snow, then refreeze..
I have observed swings in SNR as well. Probably mostly on the outside wires and connections.
Route your internal modem wiring run away from power cables if you can, try to avoid induced noise. Same with fluorescent lights. |

| reply to bryanviper Cat5 and crimping a RJ-11 jack works well. But the shorter the cable the better. I am running 2ft cables from my pots filter-> to my modems. and it's like an extra 2 inches of wire from the De-marc -> pots. (Yes it's professional wiring job)
It really is a game of inches in that first hop from the jack to the modem. shorter IS 100% better. -- If a tree falls in the forest and it isn't heard or seen did the tree actually fall in the forest ?? |
