Here's a snapshot of the current stats on my modem.

Have 3 Mb/sec service, was Fast path for 11 months, then dropped, and after one week of Sympatico support calls came back, but interleaved.

One possible good thing I observed - the relative occupation on the Downstream seems to show 53%.

Assuming that 70% RCO (like shown on TilhasBB's image) is normal/acceptable, maybe I possibly get 4 Megabits from my line?

5 megabit might be pushing it.
can you rerun the program and dont start the snr monitor. that last box on the bottom right should give you an estimated loop length. what is it?

Your the perfect jinny pig
can you go into Modem Options and play with the Target SNR. Raise it 4 points hit option to then resync see what the % occuation is. and play with it post results

Riazg> Yes thats the link. Bicephale found it i belive.

Hummmm.

I am having some internet problems.
I would not lose sync but my internet would stop working for 1-3 seconds. msn signs out and my downloads stop then comes back.
Anyone else have these problems?

Will do in a day or two, but right now I just want to observe the modem and compare to the SpeedStream. Got disconnections with the SS, although they were short and mostly I got the same IP address.

The 546 doesn't seem to have disconnected at all yet, uptime is 8h20min.

Once I observe it and know how it works better, will play with the extra settings.

How about the 'Transmit Power' option on the 5th tab panel? I have a feeling that it's intended to raise the DSLAM output power 9send a request for that anyways). That could help people with large attenuations like mine.

Yeah, I know 5 Mbit/sec won't happen on my line, but maybe I can get 4 Mbit.

3 Megabit service worked well for almost a year before I had any problems. The wire length is about 4 Km according to Bell support people. DMT shows a vague estimate (3.8 to 6 Km) for wire lenght.

EDIT : used the TX Power option on 5th tab and a DSL resync. Seemed to raise the DSLAM transmit power from 18.5dB to 19 dB.

I think the default settings are pretty good.

Anyone who is getting sub 5megabit want to play with your modem and show us what it can do

Had missed your post - Big thank you, as the thread you linked to is VERY informative.

Starting with how to do the SNR tweaking, it's not very clear in DMT.

This will get me started in the right direction.

EDIT :

Followed directions on the thread linked above. Used value '10' for modemoptions 00.

SNR just before applying setting was 8.0. After resync, came back at 15 dB. Now got to wait a few hours and see if it is stable.

Seems best to use number values for register 00 than the slider (which has no number values, and is more inaccurate, imo).

The higher your getting your SNR the lower your attainable rate. your just increasing the rejection rate.

aka. you put a filter and anything lower than X amount won't even be used so your SNR seems higher because its rejecting all the ones that dont cut it. So I would increase the SNR just high enough so your attainble is around 85%-90% leave some head room.

In my case, what I am trying to do is find the highest possible SNR, with the best Occupancy on the line.

The setting I used improved the SNR, and the RCO is now about 48% (attainable being 6266 Kb/s).

Once these are tested for stability, I could approach Sympatico and request that they increase my synch rate for testing purpose. Not a full 5 Mb/s, but hopefully 4 Mbit might work for me... Showing them a good occupancy potential is crucial to get it.

These current settings have been on for about 5.5 hours, and the SNR ranged between 15 and a low of 13 dB. Good numbers for my line!

Post a picture of DMT please.

I think you can handle 5megbit now actually.

Here it is - it's been stable since last night.

These modems are WAY better than the SpeedStreams.

I dont like this
Received FEC : 18513
Received CRC : 4
Received HEC : 4
Transmitted FEC : 42
Transmitted CRC : 2
Transmitted HEC : 0

3811 - 6269 Loop Length hehehehe
Your on Interleave ouchh...
Attenuation at 52 SNR 14.
K can you try lower your SNR a bit but keep the attainable above 5600
Because I know for 5Megabit at 100% you need an attainable of 5532 atleast.
Also pump your Tx power from 19.0 to 19.5 (max her out)

Attainable line rate : 5532 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 5056 kbit/sec
Rel. capacity occupation : 100

How is your setup now?
modem to phone jack directly? (how long is the phone cable)
By the way USE the new phone cable you got with the modem its quite good. As good quality as the old nortel one I had.

The are some errors, FEC mostly, yeah. The wire is pretty long here, 4 Km according to Bell folks.

I had Fast path for 10 months, until November. Waited a month before calling Bell, we had so much rain, everything was soaked all over the place, etc. Finally, after a week of headaches and daily phone calls, got stable 3 Mb/s synch back, but interleaved.

Speeds have been good, so I did not complain.

Relative occupancy of 100%? Don't think the Test Centre folks will like that, lol. I plan to test and stabilize things, then ask for an increase to 4Mb/s, possibly.

Wiring here is pretty special, custom made to try get the best DSL signal. I posted some pictures and description on this thread in the Sympatico forum.

Basically, phone system split at the demarc, straight CAT5 run to a dedicated DSL jack. Modem provided 6 ft flat cable between modem jack and dedicated DSL wall jack. Other home phone wiring double-filtered right at the entry point.

The phone cord that came with the SpeedTouch is indeed nice, the best one I have seen so far. A very satisfying click, tight fit when it connects to the rj-11 jacks. I like it!!

TX power - I tried placing the slider on 'MaxPower', but then you have to hit 'Modify' and it didn't seem to stick. Would be best to use a bit value on the boxes, but I don't know which to use.

Did the slider work for Max power for you?

I like your line setup very nice.

Mine is always on max but after playing with snr it goes up and down like it feels like you have to play with the modify and play with the settings
we should check the DMT site forums.

Thanks for the comment, I like the wiring too. Was worth it, a lot of GB came down that path, lol..

Came up with something that could help others. Bicephale had mentioned heat as a bit of concern for the SpeedTouch models. Then I did some reading on this thread.

Lifted up my 546 and it felt very warm on the underside, probably one of the chips is located on the underside of the circuit board and giving off heat.

Solution, used a couple of paperclip boxes (handiest object around atm) to raise the modem up a couple centimetres.

The heat I felt first time checking is no longer there - I think this might be a good idea, raise your modem to allow more airflow into the base holes.

Someone in that thread suggested using 4 plastic bottle caps, and boy, that should work just nice, they are the right size.

Tried reading the DMT site, but the little info there is all in German. The ThinkBroadband UK forums are probably our best bet, folks there have been using DMT for a while.

I found a comment on the forums that the UK version of the firmware is a bit different from the global/generic one. They seem to place an emphasis on ADSL, the most common service there.

Same situation in Canada so far, so maybe we should try the UK variants?

The UK 546 model page includes version 6.1.4.6.

So you have been playing with the firmware back and forth?

How did you install the new one? Using the tool on the CDROM?

CDROM? ohhh that cd thats still sealed in the box. nope

I followed TSI Steve's post.
»Re: SpeedTouch 516/546/780 Group Buy !

Very True I read the same thing about the UK firmware.
I would try it but between all 3 that I've tried I see no difference because my line is good.
You should try it on your marginal line, where you would see a difference.
