Help Making SpeedTouch 516 into "Dumb" modem

With the purchase of a SpeedTouch 516, my intention was to replace my current Daewoo ADSL 8050E router/modem, but to also keep the Daewoo as a back up. It was my first DSL modem, and came without documentation. I didn't realize that the Daewoo must be a "dumb" or "transparent bridge" modem. It works well in front of the wired Linksys BEFSR41 router, but I have been getting drop-outs lately. The BEFSR41 wired router is the gateway, DHCP server and PPPoE authenticator/dialer. The BEFSR41 interface allows me to switch easily from one DSL login to another. (Still serving out the contract with IGS/CIA/3Web for the Bell line, but speeds so poor I needed a Teksavvy login.) So, I'd realy like to keep the ability to do PPPoE from this main Linksys router interface, and be able to drop the Daewoo modem back into place if needed.

It seems that a bridge modem is transparent; its purpose is to make sense of the DSL signal and pass it along to the Linksys BEFSR41 router via the WAN port. The BEFSR41 then sends the PPPoE username and password to the ISP for authentication and receipt of a dynamic, public IP address (WAN address).

So, how do you make the SpeedTouch 516 act as a transparent bridge? I found some instructions for an Alcatel SpeeTouch at:
However, the settings will likely be different for Canada.

Would it be possible for one of the experts on this forum to create a script from the 516's command line interface options, to do this? Or, perhaps I can connect the 516 directly to the ethernet port of a computer and configure it through its interface at:
»speedtouch.lan or »192.168.1.254

One further little problem is the fact that my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) is connected to one of the ports on the wired Linksys BEFSR41 router, and since both of the Linksys routers use 192.168.1.1 as their default interfaces, I changed the wireless interface IP to 192.168.1.254 to avoid a conflict (and turned off DHCP). But, I see that this is the exact same interface IP address used as the default for the SpeedTouch 516. However, if the SpeedTouch is made into a transparent bridge modem, will it still try to use its default IP on the LAN?

Here's my layout, similar to Daniel Petri's model at:

I hope that my understanding is correct here.

Go through setup again,
192.168.1.254 -> Speedtouch (on the side) -> setup on right side at bottom.

In the wizard, on the second screen that pops up select bridged mode instead of Routed PPP, finish off the wizard and apply changes, congrats it's now in bridge mode, (you won't have access @192.168.1.254 unless you do a hard reset (and you will loose your settings).

I had to make a decision whether to have the 516 handle the PPPoE, or my router handle PPPoE.

I finally decided I should let the modem handle PPPoE, as that will minimize overhead for the router, and let the router do what it's designed to do. Now the DSL modem behaves as a transparent DHCP device to the router (one that always give the same IP address). I also have a static IP address as well..

The only thing different was that the modem required VPI of 0.35 instead of 8.35 default, which was why I had to read TekSavvy's instructions. I just configure my router into DHCP mode (same as if I would have with a cable modem), and it worked. All Linksys products work this way too...

I also noticed I can easily access both my router's config page (192.168.0.1) AND the modem's config page (10.0.0.138) from any of my internal computers, without needing to swap cables around. Before this, I wasn't able to do this... Traceroutes now show hops to the router, then modem, before going out. It also means DSL line quality utilities work right off the bat, without needing to rewire...

However, I can understand the need to run the 516 as a dumb modem and let the router handle PPPoE, to make it easy to swap with other "dumb" DSL modems... Unfortunately I think this means you will no longer be able to access your DSL modem's configuration page (without swapping cables around), because it no longer becomes an accessible hop in a traceroute (masked by the PPPoE connection between router and switch office), and thus, its configuration page would no longer be able to accessed directly...

When I connected the Speedtouch 516 DSL Modem to the ethernet port on a laptop (with WinXP), and entered the Internet Explorer browser, the configuration page for the 516 came up automatically, without using »192.168.1.254. From there, I did set the 516 as a bridge router/modem, VCI to .35, and turned off its DHCP. I replaced the Daewoo 8050E, gave the 516 time to stabilize and tried some speed tests - not just to compare the two modems, but to compare the IGS/3Web/CIA login to the Teksavvy login, at this time of the day.

On the first run of speed tests, I thought my old Daewoo was getting better results than the SpeedTouch 516. So, I ran the tests again. I think the speed test results are pretty close. But, I probably should use your method of letting the DSL modem do the routing, so I can make use of the diagnostics provided by the 516's user interface. I will have to change its IP to something other than the default 192.168.1.254, because I already set the Linksys wireless to exactly the same IP address. I think that I can follow the 516 instruction to change the default IP, or change the wireless IP (did it once already). Is it proper to have the Linksys router's DHCP active and also the SpeedTouch 516's DHCP?

The Daewoo 8050E doesn't have a hard reset hole, but it does have an extra port, labelled "console", that looks like a female serial port (if there is such a thing).

I guess the 516 could also be kept aside for diagnostic purposes, if I reset it and make it the only router on the system. Just thought I'd try it, 'cause drop outs have occurred lately, and the 516 might have solved the problem, or permitted proper diagnostics. Actually, I bought two of them, 'cause my son is having the same problem in London.

The following 4 sets of speed tests took place on Jan 29, at 4:09 p.m., 4:29 p.m., 4:37 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. The first column used the IGS/3Web/CIA login, and the second column used a Teksavvy login. The first three tests were on SpeedTest.net (Toronto, New York, Montreal) and the last test in each set was to New York using the SpeakEasy Javascript test on DSL Reports.
