Re: [northeast] Manhattan Apartment Building Wired for FiOS

DMS1 post is absolutely correct. In regards to VZ FTTH VDSL ,VDSL is not there method of delivering video service. VDSL is used to deliver your internet / POTS service in the same manner there DSL service is delivered , except the equipment is now on your property. Once FiOS TV is available for your area they will then activate the MDU ONT's RF port and the video service will be distributed from a video tap , currently as CATV is delivered to your apartment over the existing coax.

In regards to the users VDSL review mentioned above. He has the Tellabs 625 VDSL MDU ONT , and his service is delivered once again as traditional DSL service with his existing POTS service. He is also being serviced via VDSL-1 service , this service has a set limitation of speed / distance and the current set-up involves having two devices (Actiontec /Zyxel VDSL modem). VDSL-2 limitations are greater , and also will be serviced via the new GPON system.

Check this link for a quick tutorial , also click on the Verizon tutorial for pics and maybe some other information that may help you.

I think doing VDSL for Internet/Pots and then Coaxial for Television is a much better idea than the AT&T U-Verse situation where they are trying to pump everything down one pair. By splitting up the two they give the user a dedicated pipe for their data and a dedicated pipe for their TV.

I really wouldn't complain if Verizon brought VDSL to my apartment, but sadly that will never happen :-(

Fiber optics will indeed be delivered to Manhattan apartments across the city. Manhattan is a very dense city. Those people living on 5th avenue in Manhattan for instance want BEST OF BREED services. Its a shame how Howard Millstein\\\'s Liberty Cable turned into RCN which built out the fiber pipes along with McCourt and Kiewit but never delivered on Paul Allen\\\'s true promise of what the internet was supposed to be about. As Paul Allen himself said, the RCN bankruptcy emergence would have been bad for the true spirit of the internet and in fact, true to Paul Allen\\\'s word that is EXACTLY what happened.

With that being said, Fiber Optics is key to this nation and to the urban city. Doctors, lawyers, computer scientists, and all the professional humans around rely on this. If ANYONE thinks that quality broadband to New York city and its highrises isn\\\'t coming and with a strong economic base to boot, you have something else coming.

New technologies are driving the cost per home passed down for fiber optics and we are going to see a huge building spurt to occur in the urban cities. Verizon has to test how fast it can get the system up in New York City and this MDU appears to be an early install. The city\\\'s telecommunications system is decades old in some parts especially in New York City and Verizon has to and wants to compete and roll out FIOS and upgrade the infrastructure and in fact make it more redundent as well just like it has with its Verizon Wireless division. Sometimes we are slow to change and adapt but companies which do this often die a painful death as competition moves in strongly which in this case is Time Warner Cable in the urban city.

We are living in a post 9/11 world where Verizon IMHO failed the last round where telecommunications links went down because of the aging infrastructure. I don\\\'t think Verizon will make the same mistake twice especially now that customers have a choice of Multiple Provider pipes to choose from for the last mile.

Erich P. Ippen for instance was instrumental in new technology available to reduce the cost of fiber optics deployment for the next generation and I quote \\\"Alex Schoenfelder, general manager of the integrated photonics business at JDS Uniphase Corp., said the MIT research could help drive down production costs of making optical devices while moving the technology away from the core of a network and toward the end consumer.

\\\"It will push the boundary between optics and electronics very close to the end customer,\\\" he said. \\\"And that will be the significance, it will open the marketplace to significantly higher volumes than we\\\'re serving today.\\\"

Alex Schoenfelder, general manager of the integrated photonics business at JDS Uniphase Corp., said the MIT research could help drive down production costs of making optical devices while moving the technology away from the core of a network and toward the end consumer.

Yes, Roosevelt Island and a few buildings being fed off of the 86th St. CO on the Upper East Side already have FIOS.

Recently I had the opportunity to spend some time with a well-placed Verizon insider with significant engineering and marketing responsibilities within the FIOS area. I asked him about the plan to deploy MDU's in NYC. He is on the management team that is responsible for rolling out FIOS in NYC.

He told me that Verizon plans to run fiber to individual apartments and they plan to install flush mounted ONT's in closets in each apartment. He said the ONT was designed to fit between the wall studs. The plan was always to work out the kinks, ramp up expertise and build some momentum in Staten Island before diving into the other 4 boroughs. He acknowledged that it is a huge undertaking that will take years to accomplish.

They are installing regular ONTs on Roosevelt Island. The building is a new construction and there are wiring cabinets in each unit. I have seen a similar setup in a new building east of Lexington around 86th (sorry, no exact address as it has been almost a year since I was last apartment shopping).

You mean the Octagon in Roosevelt Island?

I heard also Forest Hills MDUs in Queens are getting FIOS such as in Birchwood Towers. Seems like Manhattan AND Queens are good to go as far as MDU's are concerned.

i do alot see alot of mdu work like this. id say thats about as good as it gets for postwiring an existing building. i wonder if when they are finished they plan on putting molding to cover up the risers going floor to floor. id leave as little as possible for people to screw with.

When will Staten Island will get FIOS TV?

Did your insider have anything to say about when Staten Island might get FIOS TV? I have a friend who just bought a condo in a big multi-unit building on Staten Island. She is getting FIOS telephone and broadband, and it would be extremely convenient if she could get FIOS TV as well, rather than having to go with cable. The FIOS installation guy (who, BTW, was quite competent and did a good job) said that he had heard that it might happen second quarter this year, but of course that is just rumor.

MDU's are the toughest installs. Here on Staten Island we have FiOS available in, I'd guess, about 50 buildings. Currently, all are retrofits. There are also 2 large buildings under construction with the ONT's that will "fit between the wall studs", otherwise known as Greenfield.

I can't imagine the need to build-up anymore momentum since we're working 7 days a week, already.

Two weeks ago, the housing projects in Park Hill opened for installs. 1000 units became "Fios ready" overnight!

Anyone living in an MDU that plans on getting FiOS, please don't get angry at us when we ask you to empty your closet...

Any rumors as to when IPTV over VDSL2 will be deployed for older MDU's?

I happen to live in the building originally mentioned at the start of this thread.

They installed an ONT, battery, and Actiontec Router. They wired each room with cat5 Ethernet cable.

The Actiontec router has some great hardware in it. In fact it uses a MIP 533mhz CPU capable of running linux. However, the Actiontec uses a proprietary firmware called OpenRG that has some awful bugs in it.

The holes allowing for the fiber run in each compactor room were eventually filled with a compound.

PM me if you have any additional questions.
