| reply to Kramer said by Kramer :I use McAfee on our many household computers because Comcast provides it for free. They recently changed versions to a fairly robust version 7.1 which addressed all my complaints from the earlier version. I will probably have to revisit this at least on my own computer, which I plan to be running Vista on in the near future. Besides bug fixes are there any real improvements in mcafee? I have them with comcast too but gave up when I had too many problems. |

| reply to mers2 I've been using Avast as my primary AV for a few years now. I like it because it has the same engine as the pay version and is very customizable with protection available for email, IMs, Network, Web and P2P in addition to the resident shield if one so desires, or has the surfing practices to warrant it. I've used F-Prot for DOS as an occasional back up scanner but will be dropping that. -- Team Discovery

I've tried many of them but KAV is the only one that I use now. |

NOD32 running resident on a WinXP laptop, with AVG Free as the back-up on-demand scanner. Happy with both of them. -- Life is simply one damned thing after another. |

| reply to mers2 Great poll mers2! Use KAV on my main computer. Been testing AVG, Avast and AntiVir/Avira on my old box. All free versions and all have been doing a terrific job. No major problems with any of them. Will decide on a permanent one shortly. I'll give you a hint. It starts with an A! LOL -- To Think or not to Think: That is the real question. I love how customizable it is, modules can be turned on or off or "tweaked".

Surprisingly it's in 2nd place right now. Seems while others constantly defend their choice Norton users just go about. |

| reply to carinstaller said by carinstaller :AVG free. I'm starting to wonder if I should change to something else. It missed one of the newest trojans going around spam mail so I found a link to summit it [virus@grisoft.com] after confirming it was a trojan/virus [virusscan.jotti.org]. It showed up again in my mail a few days latter. AVG updates nightly. I have mail scanning on. I just did my homework and switched to AntiVir Personal edition Classic. We'll see how it works. |

| reply to mers2 I'm using AntiVir/Avira PE Premium at this time. I have licenses for KAV 6 and NOD32. Even though I think AntiVir is a fine AV, I'm thinking I might switch back to KAV or NOD in the near future. Then again, maybe not. |

| reply to mers2 I voted NAV 2006. I love, love, love the daily updates. No more Intelligent Updater like I had to do with NAV Pro 2004 if I wanted daily updates. NAV 2006 is my real-time scanner.
I also voted KAV. I use KAV 5.0 for on demand scanning, but recently the subscription ran out and it seems I am no longer able to purchase a new subscription for that particular version. KAV 6.0 is not an option on this machine because of Norton.
If I cannot get a new subscription for KAV 5.0, I won't run any AV on demand.

2 edits | reply to mers2 Well, as the numbers continue mounting, two initial observations/questions.
1) In the '06 av-comparatives results, only 3 products obtained ADVANCED+ rank in all 4 main tests. Upon becoming aware of the testing, (blink - blink) GData AVK??, TrustPort?? along with NOD32, the declared winner. I'd never heard of GData or TrustPort prior, and still have never tested either. Both dual-engine scanners, GData used Kaspersky/Bitdefender and TrustPort used Bitdefender/Norman. GData, it is predicted, will not fair as well in '07, as they've replaced the BD engine with Avast. Anyway, as I type, not a single vote for GData and TrustPort missed this poll. Why?
2) I continue to be surprised by the popularity of the, clearly inferior, AVG product. Largest voting percentage probably using the free offering .. so, why do you that use AVG choose it over other, clearly superior, free offerings .. like AntiVir or the AOL, Kaspersky engine, offering? -- HN7000s|H1(127W)-1110mhz|.98m-2w|Pro+|3.0ghz dual-core|3gig-ram|BFG7800GT-OC-256MB|XP-SP2 "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything." -- Wyatt Earp |
